Background
|
Romulans are an offshoot race from Vulcans that left the Vulcan homeworld before the revolution in thinking urged on by Surak had overthrown the old militaristic ways. Romulan society is ruled by a near-totalitarian military government, and duty to the Romulan Star Empire is required to be placed above personal safety in all circumstances. All citizens are expected to give their lives for their government without question. They are xenophobic to other races. |
Recent History
Empire Restructuring: |
As the Rihannsu Empire withdrew from galactic events
following the Federation/Romulan war, the only thing the Federation knew
for certain about them was the fact that they were submerged in political
turmoil. After Romulan operatives failed to execute the Federation
Commander McCoy (Book: The Romulan Way), the Empire was torn over whether
to return to rule by mnhei'sahe, or continue under the domination of influence
gained through the accumulation of money and power. McCoy was aided
in his escape by the renegade khre'Riov Ael, who extolled the virtues of
mnhei'sahe and condemned the Senators for corruption and a lack of Rihannsu
virtues. After making her escpae, Ael began to build an underground
movement to overthrow the Empire leadership.
Ael quickly gained a following, and mounted a campaign which placed her in the vacant office of Fvillha, but with the Senate split between her supporters and traditionalists, things soon boiled over into a full scale civil war, with the traditionalists fighting a losing battle against the supporters of a renewed government by mnhei'sahe. Before the war was over, though, Ael herself condemned the struggle as a waste of the energies of the Empire. Shortly afterwards, Ael and her loyal crew once again disappeared from the Empire. Ael's condemnation gave the combatants pause in their struggle, and shortly after her disappearance an agreement was reached where the elderly Deihu Vasami tr'Joachim, a longtime moderate, would take on the mantle of Fvillha to manage a slow transition to a new order in the Empire. The leader of the traditionalists, Enriov Telzar tr'Ralaren, and the leader of the reformers, Enriov Sh'ren tr'Vaebn, agreed to support tr'Joachim as a compromise candidate. He ruled the Empire for a surprisingly long time, given his precarious position balanced between the supporters of the status quo and the proponents of change. As time went on however, Enriov Telzar the leader of the traditionalists, began to suspect tr'Joachim of sympathies with the reformers, and when he was appointment to the high office of galae'Enriov he continued his support of the popular Senate reforms hostile to Empire elites, tr'Joachim quietly gave his tacit support to the reformers. In response, Telzar began a program of civil disturbance culminating in an anti-Fvillha rally staged in Fvillha square. The next day, tr'Joachim personally delivered a sword to Telzar, requesting his permanent resignation through honourable suicide. Telzar rallied members of House Ralaren to his cause and attempted to mount an armed rebellion, beginning with an attempted assassination of tr'Vaebn and ending with the murder of tr'Joachim in his state office. Popular sentiment no longer supported Telzar, however, and he was quickly captured and later committed suicide in his cell. House Ralaren was disbanded, it's members escaping into exile or murdered in the streets. After the death of tr'Joachim, the Senate met to elect a new Fvillha. In an apparent reaction against the turmoil caused by the military leaders of the Empire, the Senate elected a ranking civilian government official, Rae'henaj tr'Rhelliael-thra'ein, to the office of Fvillha. However, Rae'henaj had a difficult relationship with the military and he quickly tired of his leadership role. Worn down by the strains of office, Rae'hanej took ill and died only half a year after becoming Fvillha. With the death of Rae'henaj, the struggle started so many years ago by Ael finally came to an end when Sh'ren tr'Vaebn was overwhelmingly elected to the position of Fvillha by the Senate. Rule by the dictates of honour and mnhei'sahe became the official policy of the Empire, and the Rihannsu moved forward with a new feeling of vitality and purpose. Fvillha tr'Vaebn ruled the Empire for almost 50 years of his life. Late in his life tragedy struck the Empire, when the Fvillha was accidentally killed in a hunting accident. As the life drained from his body, the last words of the Fvillha were reported to be, "Honor, always." The death of tr'Vaebn left a leadership void in the Empire, as the still vigourous Fvillha had not yet groomed a successor. A struggle of succession ensued as several Fvillhas gained and lost the position in a short period. Katan tr'Joachim briefly won the post using his lineage from his uncle, the late Vasami tr'Joachim, to leverage several fragile voting alliances into place, but tragically he disappeared mysteriously on a deep space mission only one year into his rule. Katan tr'Joachim was soon replaced by S'Tane t'Rhelliael-thra'ein, an experienced and tenacious legislator, who used the shear numbers of her powerful and influencial House to cement a commanding Senatorial coalition, backed by a powerful military. Still, S'Tane had not succeeded in fully uniting the Empire under her rule, and dissent plagued her government. A strong group led by Sienae tr'Rhelliael-thra'ein from within her own House drove her into isolation in a monastery in the mountains of ch'Havran. In recent days, the Empire has been united under the strong military rule of S'Cryn tr'Knialmnae. With the loyalty of the Fleet behind him, S'Cryn was able to appease the Senate and bring the Empire to heel under a harsh military authority. |
The Fall of Rigel | It was not much longer after that the Orion Syndicate began to collapse. With their govornment in shambles the head of the Orions came to the Rihannsu for help, both economic and political. With the Federation and the Klingon Empire growing decreasingly tollerant, they had little choice but to beg the Rihannsu for help. Feigning assistance, the Rihannsu agreed to the terms of the treaty. The Orions had other plans however. Counting on their Rihannsu allies to come to their aid, the Orions made an attempt on the Klingon Govornment. The coup was failed, when the Rihannsu did not come to their aid. The Klingons began a systematic extermination of the Orions. Though the Federation objected, they refused to take a stand, and the genocide of the Orions was carried out with grim efficency. It is estimated that less than 80,000 Orions are left alive. |
The Ihlarei Incident | With the Orions out of the picture, the Rihannsu began a new campaign of Espionage against its enemies. During one of these missions, (Speculated to be an attempt to retreive a deep cover operative) the ChR Ihlarei was captured by Federation forces. During the ensuing firefight both Galae'Enriov Rohn tr'Rhelliael and several members of his Staff were killed, and the operative was also killed in the fighting. The ship was later retreived by Efk'khelh operatives, and brought back to full service. |
Isolation | In 2311 (Terran Year) the Rihannsu once again withdrew into it's borders and remained isolated from the UFP except for the customary "Ambassador" to maintain the illusion of diplomacy. The fleet was once again improved with many new vessels being developed. In 2364 (Terran Year) after several outposts were destroyed along the coreward boarder with the UFP a ship was sent to investigate. They found that several UFP outposts across the Neutral Zone had also been destroyed, this led to the first meeting between the Federation and the Rihannsu in over 100 years. |
The Klingon Civil War | When the Klingon Chancellor died, the Rihannsu saw this as an opportunity to test the alliance between the Klingons and the UFP, the Rihannsu had been in negotiation with 2 Klingon women, Lursa and Bator - and with the Rihannsu supplies a Klingon Civil war was started in 2367. With the UFP's assisting the Klingons (not militarily), the plot was uncovered and the war ended in early 2368. |
Editors Notes: | They are intelligent, cunning, and very commonly ruthless. They also frequently revert to subterfuge in order to complete goals. Physically, Romulans and Vulcans are very similar. Both have pointed ears, giving them excellent hearing, and, like Vulcans, have an inner eyelid that will allow for near-instantaneous adjustments to varying light levels. Romulans are not quite as strong as Vulcans, because the world they chose to colonize, named Romulus by the Federation, has a slightly lower gravity than Vulcan. They also have an extended lifespan. |

23 BC | Vulcan receives first radio signals from Orion pirates arriving in their system. |
22 BC,
Jan. 18-19 |
First meeting with the Orion pirates. Orion ship lands, stuns and kidnaps most of the official Vulcan delegation, murders the rest. Surak is not present due to travel difficulties. S'Task is captured. The `Ahkh' begins. |
22 BC, March | End of the `Ahkh'. Vulcans drive off the Orions using a combination of traditional warfare and psi weapons. |
22 BC, Nov. | Cloaked Orion spy ship destroyed. Hulk left in desert outside Te'Rikh as a monument. |
23 BC | Riots on Vulcan as militaristic Vulcans in favour of arming to meet the interstellar threat clash with the more numerous pacifists supporting Surak. |
7 BC | The number of the `Declared', Vulcans pledged to follow S'Task on the Journey, reaches 12000. S'Task first suggests that those who wish to go on the Journey should donate all their possesions to the cause. |
11 | The number of the `Declared' reaches almost five percent of Vulcan's population. Ultimately, the limited number of ships, and the waning of early excitement about the project will substantially reduce the number of Vulcans who leave on the Journey. |
25 | Rea's Helm leaves orbit and begins a three month tour of the solar system before accellerating out into interstellar space. Shortly followed by Warbird, Starcatcher, T'Hie, Pennon, Bloodwing, Corona, Lance, Gorget, Sunheart, Forge, Lost Road, Blacklight, Firestorm, Vengeance, Memory, and Shield. |
55 | The fartravel ships arrive at the first star on their tour, 88 Eri. No habitable planets are found, and after reconoitering the system the ships continue on towards 198 Eri. |
UNKNOWN | Seven ships: Pennon, Starcatcher, Bloodwing, Forge, Lost Road, Lance, and Blacklight, are caught in the event horizon of a newly formed blackhole nearby 198 Eri. All seven ships are lost. |
UNKNOWN | The remaining fartravel ships reach 198 Eri. Demoralized after the blackhole disaster, they spend 3.5 years in orbit, storing up energy and debating the future of the Journey. S'Task prevails in the debate and the ships continue on to 4408A/B Trianguli. |
UNKNOWN | Two ships: T'Hie and Corona, lost to the mind destroying race called the `Iruhe' at 4408B Trianguli. The remainder of the fleet flees 4408A/B at high speed. Firestorm and Vengeance become separated from the rest of the ships and wander for several years before rejoining the fleet. |
UNKNOWN | Warbird suffers a drive failure and falls into 114 Trianguli while attempting a slingshot maneuver. |
UNKNOWN | Shield is lost or destroyed. |
UNKNOWN | Memory suffers a drive failure and falls into a black dwarf while attempting a slingshot maneuver. |
UNKNOWN | Sunheart abandoned after disease kills most of the crew. |
About 533 | The four remaining ships: Rea's Helm, Gorget, Vengeance and Firestorm, arrive in the 128 Trianguli system and find two habitable worlds. |
534 | The two worlds are named `ch'Rihan' and `ch'Havran' and the first Travellers begin to disembark from the fartravel ships to colonize the two worlds. |
537 | The last of the Travellers disembark from the ships, leaving only the Ship Clans. |
594 | Under the rule of Councillor T'Rehu, the nation of Elheu raises a standing army and begins threatening its neighbors. Between 594 and 606, T'Rehu invades several smaller neighboring nations. |
606 | T'Rehu receives the Grand Councillorship after intimidating the Grand Council with the possible use of her armies, and her alliances with the technologically advanced Ship Clans. S'Task walks out on her, and she swears he will never do so again. |
612 | Famine strikes the South Continent of ch'Havran and 1500 die. T'Rehu has S'Task (aged 248) murdered in the High Council when he attempts to walk out. She declares the beginning of the `rule of women' and takes the title of `Ruling Queen'. |
630 | A faction from the Eastern continent overthrows T'Rehu and sets up the Tricameral system of government. |
784 | By this time, the technology in the four remaining Ships has substantially degraded and fallen into disrespair. The Ship Clans have dwindled, and the Romulans now lack an interstellar travel capacity. |
835 | Over the years 835 to 935, the orbits of the Ships decay and they all fall from the sky. |
1043 | The Romulan government completes a small satelite warning and defense system. |
2034 | The Romulans develop the technology of artificial gravity. |
2134 | The USS Carrizal enters the Romulan star system, evades the satellite warning system, and beams radio first contact messages to the two inhabited planets. The Romulans do not answer them, and the Carrizal leaves after completing its studies. |
2137 | The USS Balboa enters the Romulan star system and is destroyed by the massed particle beams of fifty newly built Romulan ships. The USS Stone Mountain is captured while answering the Balboa's distress call and dissected to acquire warp drive technology. |
2162 | After a bad defeat at the Battle of Cheron discourages the Romulans, and the Vulcans pursuade the Federation, the two sides negotiate the Treaty of Alpha Trianguli. The Treaty establishes the Neutral Zone as a one light year buffer between Federation and Romulan space. |
