Xanthocnemis zealandica is a very common species, widely distributed thoughout New Zealand amongst littoral vegetation of lakes, ponds, and sometimes rivers. The largely sedentary and cryptic larvae can swim with a laborious wagging motion, the legs being held out in front of the body. NZMCI score = 5
