Steve's

Web Page Design Notes

Ever wonder what goes through the twisted mind of a web designer and general know-it-all/game commentator? Come now and look into the very Mouth of Hell itself (or go out and buy a booster pack if you haven't)...

Do you stick to the "Official" Doomtown Storyline?
Not really. Until such time as FRPG itself starts telling folks to stop playing certain characters because they've "died" in the official storyline, those characters will make the occasional appearance here. Thus, Pierre Fontaine does still have something to say in my little pocket universe. I'm also not entirely conversant with every official and unofficial story out there, so there may be discrepancies between what I mention and what is out there elsewhere.
What about the 'Doomtown or Bust" Deadlands sourcebook?
I've thumbed through the Deadlands sourcebook, and will probably pick it up at some point. My character portrayals seem to be pretty much in sync with what they mention there (other than the fact they seem to think Xemo is competent - go figure). I do use the official Doomtown storyline for my own pieces of fiction, as opposed to the little "fictional" blurbs for the various cards. Confusin', ain't it?
How experienced are you?
Not very. There ain't a lot of Doomtown players in these parts, pardner (although I'm workin' on it). And most of the games I play are of the two-player variety. So if something sounds incredibly stupid, feel free to drop me a line and let me know.
Why is there some really weird stuff in some of the character quotes, that don't make much sense?
I'm a big fan of in-jokes. Like the guys on MST3K say, "If you don't get everything, we're doing our job." There are movie, TV, comic book, theatre, and old Deadland campaign stuff tossed in here and there. If you really can't decipher an in-joke and you're incredibly frustrated by this lack of knowledge, let me know. Alternately, I may just have been rambling at the time, and it won't make sense no matter how hard you look. Ain't life grand?
Boy, that strategy would never work in a tournament - are you full of it?
See above. I haven't played in a tournament to date. As such, I'm more of a "fun" player, and one who tries to find a use for every card. Some of my strategies are kinda...well, esoteric. In a tournament I probably wouldn't get enough time to use them, or I'd get steamrollered over. I also like to cover all my bases. Yeah, Nowhere to Run plus Pinned Down might not work in a hundred years, but it is a combination and one that someone else might develop further from my initial comments and analysis.
Your description of [FILL IN THE BLANK] doesn't cover Strategy 15A. Why not?
This is not intended to be a comprehensive site that covers every card in detail. Even if I eventually do every Outfit, some cards may never get analysed (like a number of the Strike/Deeds - do I really need to analyse Harlot's Haven?). I also tried to keep the individual card pieces short. So I don't cover every possible use of, say, Nate Hunter (experienced). I try to do a bit "in-character" piece, a general overview of the card, and maybe one or two specific strategies.
Why are some pictures missing?
Because I'm limited to my collection and that of a couple of other folks who are helping out. If you have a GIF or JPG you want to send me, feel free. I'll pretty it up for inclusion on my site and credit you accordingly.
Boy, your web design and HTML coding really stinks. What's up with that?
And a fine how-ya-do to you too. I'm a talent amateur at this point. I'm slowly cleaning the stuff up as my knowledge expands. As long as it looks reasonably pretty on-screen, I'm not too concerned about whether I'm using "proper" web page structure.
Why don't you use frames?
Well, I could. However, Geocities is not the most friendly server in the world when it come to that, due to the Geoguide banner. I either include that, which looks okay on the main screen but tends to throw the (typical) left-hand screen way off, or use those darn pop-up things instead. If anyone has any suggestions on how you can get around that in GeoCity, drop me a line.
Where are you going from here?
Well, the current format I use takes up a relatively large amount of time and space. That's because it's (I hope) decent writing and analysis. As such, I'm slowly trying to get more Outfits on here. As well as keep up on new releases. As such, updating existing Outfits for new releases is my first priority. After that, I'll probably add in a new Outfit occasionally. The Maze Rats are probably next on the list, followed by (in no particular order) Sweetrock, the Blackjacks, the Agency, and the Sioux. I continue to do fiction whenever the need arises, so that keeps me busy too. I may toss in other features, like maybe some kind of Card of the Week review. And I'll continue to generally pretty up the site in general, making it more user- and load-friendly.
But you are going to do every Outfit eventually, right?
Well, maybe. One advantage of the format I use is that it makes the characters interesting and fun to read about, as they speak in the first person. Now, for whatever sad commentary it makes upon my personality, I can "get into" the Whateleys and the Collegium better than the other Outfits (bwah-hah-hah...). Currently, I can't really envision myself doing the Texas Rangers justice in quite the same manner. Which is probably why I don't play them currently, either (see next entry).
Do you play a lot of different decks?
I currently alternate between everyone except the Rangers. My favorites are probably the Collegium, the Whateleys, and the Blackjacks. The Texas Rangers are not big on my list of Outfits to pick up. Guess I just like a more "focused" deck.
How did you become such an incredibly great writer, capturing the essence of the game and the characters?
Gee, how kind. 20+ years as a gamemaster in several dozens RPGs, and a lot of semi-professional writing and playtesting. You can check out my credentials at my Bibliography Page.
There aren't much in the way of legal disclaimers and stuff, is there...?
Nope. However, to make it clear, all material rights revert to FRPG and/or Pinnacle Games. Artwork is credited to the artist (which is more than some Doomtown sites can claim), and no infringement of their rights is intended either. Steve's Doomtown Resource Page is a non-profit organization, and in fact represents some considerable time and effort on Steve's part to promote FRPG, the various artists therein, and (albeit indirectly) Pinnacle Games *no applause, please*.
