By 1889, all the major powers except Russia were on a gold standard, and people had the right to exchange their currency for gold, which resulted in very stable exchange rates. The most common currencies and their values are listed below.
- Pounds Sterling
The British use Pounds, Shillings, and Pence as their currency. There are 12 pence to a shilling, and 20 shillings (thus, 240 pence) to a pound. Ha'pennies (half-pennies) and farthings (quarter-pennies) are also used. Prices are written as pounds shillings / pence, so for example six pounds, two shillings and three pence would be £6 2/3, said "six pounds, two and three pence". The Pound is valued at $5 American, the shilling 25 cents, and the pence slightly more than 2 cents.
- American Dollars
The most widespread currency after the pound, there are 100 cents to the dollar, and a dollar is worth about 4 shillings.
- Francs
The former official currency of France, still used in Switzerland, Italy, and by the French underground.
Francs are worth roughly 10 pence, or 20 cents.
- Reichmark
Used by Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, the Reichmark is worth a shilling, or 25 cents.
- Sava
The Martian empires in South America and Africa use Sava and Gadri as
currency, and they have just been adopted by the Belgians and the Belgian conquests of Franch
and parts of Germany.
20 Gadri equal to one Sava. The exchange rate is roughly 10 shillings to the Sava, although because of the hostility towards the Martians this currency is not widely accepted outside of the Martian empires or Belgium.
