Chapter Ten

FURTHER CONVERSATIONS WITH DEF LEPPARD

Monday night, Def Leppard was on ROCKLINE, via satellite
from Hollywood, CA. At 11:30 pm, I started to dial the 800
number repeatedly, until finally--I got through!

The woman answered, said, "Do you have a question for Def Leppard?"
I said, "Yes, I do!"
She took my question down word for word and repeated it
back to me, changing a few of the words, so I changed my
typewritten copy to agree with hers.
She said, "You have a really good question. We are going
to put you on the "air" live with Def Leppard. Turn your
radio down and you will be on 'hold'. Before we put you
on the "air" we will let you know."

I waited 15-20 minutes until the woman came back on the
line with me.
She said "You're going to be on next."
I cannot tell how nervous I was, sitting and waiting for
that period of time since she first answered the phone...
then knowing I was going to be on next!!
I thought my heart was going to explode!

Next, their new song "Truth" was being played (which is the
first cut on the new CD).
The guy who announced the song said, "...and that's the
"Truth"!"
I was parked on the chair in front of the stereo, headset
on, paper on my lap, tape recorder running and flashlight
in the dark.

"Okay, Ruth, you're on 'live' with Def Leppard!"

"I sense some spiritual undertones to "S~L~A~N~G" Is it
the ideals of the group as a whole or just a few of you
that goes along with Hindu or Buddha culture?"
After all their hellos, my question, Phil said, "Wait,
repeat that last part. No, seriously, I want to hear that
again!"

I said, "On the inside cover of the CD is a picture of a
Buddha or Hindu guy."

Phil said, "Oh, that! That's just the artists' interpretation,
by the guy who designed the cover.
That's the impression he got out of it and we felt the same way."
"That's absolutely nothing to do with the album at all,
that's just the people who done the artwork for the sleeve
design they uh... that was their translation. They
heard some of the songs, I guess some of the Indian
instruments on "Turn To Dust", kind of influenced them to
put that on the sleeve and we liked it, it kind of went
with the flavor of everything, so we said, yeah, it's cool."

ANNOUNCER: "But no conscious effort on any of yours part
in terms of a Buddhist philosophy or a Hindu philosophy?"

PHIL: "No, that's just how they read it basically and we
thought it was cool."

ANNOUNCER: "Thank you."
