There was the introduction of a new villain. Mary Jane is alive and is prisoner of him in an abandoned diner, somewhere in Manhattan. He is, in reality, the one who stalked MJ for a long time. He had kidnapped MJ and placed another woman in her place on the plane, then he had exploded the plane, killing everybody and achieving his objective: make Peter Parker think she was dead. It would make him vulnerable. His final goal was capture Peter Parker, in order to take his place as Spider-Man. In summary, the new villain wanted to rob Peter's life.

Following his senses, Spider-Man found the abandoned diner and Mary Jane. But, when he was hugging her, he was attacked and knocked out by the new villain.

Later, Spider-Man found his new enemy again, somewhere in the Central Park. They talked and fought for a long time. Discovering that if he killed Peter, he would never be the Spider-Man, the new foe walked away through the trees and exploded himself, without even say his name.

The Amazing Spider-Man Annual 2001

TASM-A-2001 Mary Jane is back, but life will never be the same.

Feeling that her relationship with Peter and Spider-Man was not what she wanted for herself, she decided to leave. So, she said goodbye to Peter and went away.

Commentaries

1. Howard Mackie ended his long run on the wall-crawler with this status-quo-changing issue.

2. Marvel Comics got rid of Mary Jane, what enabled them to take Peter Parker / Spider-Man back to his origins. This was disgusting, in my opinion. The summary updates stopped for a while, but, as a Spidey fan, I could recover myself and continue reading the stories.

So, the updates will continue.
