As Daniel grew up on the star ship he took basic schooling. But his father, who was chief of engineering at the time, taught him everything he knew about star ships. At the age of 12 the captain was letting him do little things in engineering with the supervision of his father. Along with learning about starships a security officer on board the ship taught him tae kwon do.
It was at the age of 14 when things changed for Daniel. The USS Grand was attacked by a Romulant ship, the Decius. The Decius was a D'deridex class ship, the USS Grand should have stood no chance against it. But with the cost of 3/4 its crew the USS Grand defeated the Decius. Among the casualties were both his parents.
With the death of his parents fresh in his mind Daniel joined Starfleet with one goal in mind. Revenge. Daniel was called a natural engineer by his mentors due to his life aboard the USS Grand. In the Academy he made a lot of friends, and had a great time. He only got into trouble once, for fighting with an ensign that believed the Romulants were a superior race.
While Daniel was still in Starfleet Academy the Borg launched its first attack against the Federation. Daniel, like most others in Starfleet Academy, lost almost all his friends. And once again he promised revenge. But he knew that the Borg were much more complicated then the Romulants, which he still also seeked revenge. Shortly after Daniel left the Academy he did ground breaking research on Borg technology. He was then considered an expert on the subject. After a long time of working with Starfleet to uncover the mysteries of the Borg, Daniel became assigned to the USS Excelsior.
