Zauriel is an angel of the Eagle Host of Heaven, one of the four primary groups of angels. He gave up his immortality and assumed a form of flesh in order to warn the JLA of the coming of Asmodel, ruler of the Bull Host, who intended to erase all of the material world from existence.
Zauriel can fly with his huge wings, is strong and tough, understands magic very well and can, among other tricks, shatter angels to dust with his sonic cry.
