FACT FILE: E-5 Paladin
The E-5 Paladin is the most sophisticated aerospace command/control/communications
(C3) craft ever built. This vehicle is rarely seen near the forward edge
of battle, being unarmed and practically defenseless. However, its true
strength lies in its ability to communicate with and coordinate the actions
of up to 120 other aerospace craft, including starships. The Paladin provides
protection to other friendly aerospace craft and starships by jamming enemy
sensors, identifying enemy missiles and vehicles during combat, maintaining
clear communications between widely separated units and tracking the hundreds
of moving objects found in a typical large scale aerospace engagement.
When other facilities are unavailable, the E-5 can function as a spaceborne
command post, directing and coordinating a planetary defense if necessary.
Its communications capabilities allow it to transmit to any or all points
on a planetary surface, acting as a communications relay center if needed.
Paladins are expensive and valuable in terms of the services they provide,
therefore it is SFMC policy to station at least two flights of fighters
nearby to protect it during combat.

The Equipment Rating System
The preceeding descriptions of aerospace craft use a rating
system, rather than precise numbers. This is to simplify the factsheets,
and to make it easier to understand how each specific aerospace craft compares
to others. A value of zero (0) means none, while a value of 1 means minimal
and 10 means maximum within a given statistic.
