FACT FILE: Qapla'-class Heavy Cruiser
USS Khai Tam (NCC-81000)
The Qapla'-class cruiser is the result of a joint Klingon-Federation design project to construct a strike cruiser capable of addressing the Borg threat. Based on a Galaxy-class primary hull, the Qapla'-class ships then added a wing and nacelle structure reminisecnt of the Vorcha-class battle cruiser (but on a much larger scale). It is a capital ship heavy on weapons, but it also houses a capacious main shuttle bay that, along with it's secondary bay, is capable of operating and embarking 90 auxiliary craft (including two runabouts). Four prototypes were built (two for the Klingon Fleet and two for Starfleet) and acquitted themselves so well that Starfleet exercised its contract option for twenty more. of the large carriers have been built to date.

documented by Kevin McNulty and Colin Toenjes, who authored the "Khai
Tam Technical Orientation Manual" published by Intergalactic Press
in Orlando, FL.
Number of Ships
The original four prototypes wer the IKV Qapla' and IKV
Targ (assigned to the Klingon Fleet) and the USS Khai Tam
(NCC-81000) and the USS Relentless (NCC-81001) (both current STARFLEET
