Family affairs |
My family rose in the latter parts of the 18th century from having been rather poor into fully fledged merchants with diverse business interests. My grandfather, Arthur Jeremiah Compton, controlled a sizeable number of small shipping companies and wool industries. My father, Locksley Jeremiah Compton, inherited the controlling position of the company in 1814. I was merely six years old at that time. My mother, Josephine Compton did not bear any more children, to my fathers great sorrow. He wanted a son to inherit the family fortunes. He was, however, a very pragmatic man, and realised that if I was to marry, my husband would inherit the business. |
Therefore, it was doubly important for him to find me a suitable husband. He did not have to look very far.
One of neighbouring families, the Mayfairs, held us in high esteem, even though we were not actual nobility, merely rich upstarts. As a child I had known and sometimes played with Nigel Mayfair, so I knew him pretty well, even though we had not seen each other for a couple of years. In 1830 I was engaged to marry Nigel Mayfair. As the second son of the Mayfair family, he was originally not intended to inherit the Mayfair fortune, but "as luck would have it", as my father used to say, Nigel's older brother Robert, had been "disinherited". |
The Compton Halls |
At least that was what we were told. The truth of the matter was that Robert had been turned into something dark and sinister; a vampire. He did not hesitate, I think, when he killed me.
That was roughly 170 years ago. Today nothing remains of my family, except for me. I know that I had a distant cousin originating from my grandfather's brother, James Compton, and that we fought a battle in court over the rights of the Compton Halls, where I grew up, in between the World Wars. It was no match for me to influence the right kind of people into accepting that a girl namned Jennifer owned the rights to the house. All trouble ended when the last of the Comptons died in the Blitz. Jennifer, by the way, is a former maid from Compton Halls. I embraced her (turned her into a vampire, see my Vampire page) in 1895. I can be reached at helena_mircalla@hotmail.com for comments and thoughts.
Please be patient. I have learned to be that.
