Why MGs?

Why I bought an MGB My first experience with MGBs was a test-drive of a burgundy MGB GT in 1989. Unfortunately I had purchased a 1981 VW Passat a few days before (to replace a 1978 BMW 320 whose timing chain had snapped - ouch) so could not afford the MG. It did however begin my interest in the marque. After going through a couple more "practical" vehicles in the next few years, I finally decided we could afford to run a second car in 1996. My choice was of course an MGB and after keeping my eyes open through the summer months spotted 2 roadsters for sale. The first example was a 1978 model with bad bodywork, missing winder handles, torn rear hood window, and nonfunctioning indicators. It actually drove okay, but the asking price was only slightly less than the other roadster, so I said I would "think about it" and moved on. The MGB I finally settled on was the same Pageant blue as the first (a popular choice it seemed!). The condition was much better so I had the car checked by the local agent and after a bit of thought closed the deal. I think the owner (an air stewardess with a local airline who was moving to the mainland) was relieved when I finally said I wanted it. It only took me a week of test-drives and persuading myself we could really afford it!
