At the beginning of this document, I said that I'd leave some things out of the walkthrough, but would include them here. So here they are!

-Finding the Silver Tome-

Finding the silver tome is a large but unnecessary part of the game. You're expected to find the guild belt, then to use the guild belt to get information about the map pieces, then use the map pieces to realize the location of Captain Hawkins' grave, where you'll find the tome. I won't tell you anything about these quests (since most people who would want to find the tome would want to find it on their own), except that Captain Hawkins' grave can be found on a swampy island near Sutek's castle. Just dig in the grassless spots until you make a hole you can jump into. Once you've found the tome, take it to Mariah at the Lycaeum, who will translate it as follows:

"An ancient prophecy tells of the final days of our world. Thrice shall a being of great evil come unto our land. This evil one is of another race which believes the evil one to be a great prophet. Yet, this false prophet follows not the principles of Control, Passion, and Diligence. At first, the false prophet will steal our most treasured artifact, the codex. Then, the false prophet will cause the Underworld to collapse. This will cause great havoc. Finally, the false prophet will arrive with a band of evil warriors, and they will destroy the remains of the gargoyle race. There is only one way that this prophecy may be averted...by the demise of the false prophet!"

Is that really worth the trouble of obtaining the silver tome?

-Companions-

In case you haven't realized it already, you can ask certain people to join your party. Your group can contain a maximum of six people. However, it is possible to finish the game with only the four original members: the Avatar, Dupre, Shamino, and Iolo.

-Boosting Attributes-

If you gain a level at a shrine (except at the Shrine of Humility), one or more of your attributes (Intelligence, Dexterity, and Strength) will be increased by at least one point. The shrines increase attributes as listed below:

Shrine Intelligence Dexterity Strength
Honesty +3 . .
Compassion . +3 .
Valor . . +3
Justice +1 +1 .
Sacrifice . +1 +1
Honor +1 . +1
Spirituality +1 +1 +1
Humility . . .

For each point that Intelligence increases, maximum magic points increase by two. For each point that Strength increases, maximum equipment weight increases by one and maximum item weight increases by three. I am not certain what increases with Dexterity, but I suspect that it is attack power.

-Finding the Clues-

You can find a scroll in Nystul's room. This scroll contains a clue that will direct you to another scroll, which contains a clue that will direct you to another scroll, which contains a clue that will direct you to another...need I go on? Here's a list of the clues:

Source Clue
Scroll in Nystul's room If you're looking for the clue, there's something for you under a plant in Serpent's Hold.
Scroll in Serpent's Hold Your next hint is under a beehive in. Scroll in Minoc. You're doing well! Next you should search the harpsichord in the Blue Bottle Tavern.
Scroll in Moonglow Well done! Now go search the beds in the jail in Yew.
Scroll in Yew Most people would have given up by now. But since you haven't, you can find the next hint under a cauldron in New Magincia.
Scroll in New Magincia You're almost there! Search the stone lions in Lord British's castle. Scroll in Lord British's castle Ho eyo he hum! You've won, you've won! Go to Iolo's hut and ask Smith the horse to tell you the clue!
Scroll in British's castle Ho eyo he hum! You've won, you've won! Go to Iolo's hut and ask Smith the horse to tell you the clue!
Smith the horse Oh, that's right, I have a clue for you! You're the Warrior of Destiny, right? Well, when you go to rescue Lord British from the underworld, be sure to bring his sandlewood box with you!

That was in Ultima V, you foolish horse!

-The Book of Circles-

If you visit the Shrine of Singularity after you learn Gargish, you'll be able to read The Book of Circles, which translates as follows:

"All begins with the three principles: Control, Passion, and Diligence. From Control springs Direction. From Passion springs Feeling. From Diligence springs Persistence. But these three virtues are no more important than the other five: Control combines with Passion to give Balance. Passion combines with Diligence to yield Achievement. And Diligence joins with Control to provide Precision. The absence of Control, Passion, and Diligence is Chaos. Thus the absence of the principles points toward the seventh virtue, Order. The three principles unify to form Singularity. This is the eighth virtue, but it is also the first, because within Singularity can be found all the principles, and thus all the virtues. A circle has no end. It continues forever, with all parts equally important in the success of the whole. Our society is the same. It too continues forever, with all members (and all virtues) equal parts of the unified whole."

-Karma-

Karma is a gauge of your virtuousness (or lack thereof!)which determines the prices at which merchants sell you their wares. It can be increased or decreased by actions such as the following:

-5 Lying to the thief in Yew's jail
-2 Attacking certain animals (cats, sheep, birds, etc.) without provocation
-1 Stealing
+7 Returning keys to the jailer in Yew
+10 Gaining a level by meditating at a shrine
+10 Agreeing to wear the Amulet of Submission

Karma also determines the greeting that you will receive upon addressing a dais, as follows:

Karma Greeting
0-39 Thou hast much to learn about VIRTUE.
40-79 Thy deeds have shown admirable VIRTUE.
80-100 Thy deeds serve as an example to all.

(VIRTUE refers to the particular virtue which the dais's shrine represents. For example, at the Shrine of Honesty, VIRTUE would be read as honesty.)

-Books of the Lycaeum-

It's fun to get lost in the library because it contains fascinating books everywhere, even in its dead ends. Well, I'm going to put some of that fun right here in this document with texts of the Lycaeum's books on the Avatar's adventures! Are you sitting comfortably?

-The First Age of Darkness-

"Early in the reign of Lord British there came unto the land of Britannia a powerful wizard named Mondain. He brang forth many creatures of great evil, using the power of his magic to control them. And there was great suffering throughout the land. It was in these days that the Avatar first came unto our realm, to vanquish Mondain and liberate our people."

-The Second Age of Darkness-

"After Mondain's passing, Minax the enchantress brought forth terrors to menace the populace. She had been apprenticed to Mondain. She established a reign of terror and destruction, her magic fueled by the strength of her passion. Again it was only the return of the Avatar that put an end to the oppression. Minax was vanquished, as Mondain before her."

-The Third Age of Darkness-

"Once Minax was gone, peace reigned for twenty years. And then the last of Mondain's legacy became known. For he and Minax had together produced a wicked creation known only as Exodus. For many years it had stayed hidden, patiently gathering information to heighten its powers. Finally it chose to exploit the results of its diligence. Creating a mighty castle to reside in, Exodus brought forth a third plague of monsters, and nowhere in Britannia was safe from its relentless evil. This was the greatest challenge yet for our hero from another world; yet once again the Avatar proved triumphant. And with the defeat of Exodus, a new era of prosperity began."

-The Quest of the Avatar-

"In days not long past, the Council of Wizards erected shrines to the eight virtues, that people throughout the land might meditate upon them. It was through studying the eight virtues and the three underlying principles that the great hero, who had defeated the Triad of Evil, started down the path that led to Avatarhood. For verily it is known that the three principles are Truth, Love, and Courage. And on the quest to become the embodiment of the eight virtues, the Avatar recovered the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, and discovered that the one underlying concept that leads to the three principles which lead to the eight virtues is Infinity. Ponder this well, oh seeker!"

-Warriors of Destiny-

"After the shining example set by the Avatar, Britannia seemed all set to enter a golden age of peace and plenty. And then a great tragedy took place. Lord British, the beloved ruler who united the land of Britannia, and saw it through some of the hardest times in its history, was lost. He had gone on an expedition to explore the newly discovered Underworld, and never returned. Many thought him perished. Lord Blackthorn took control in his absence, declaring martial law to maintain order. It was also around this time that the three shadowlords appeared at Stonegate. They were powerful, evil creatures who could warp the minds of men and turn them away from the three principles. 'Tis said they could draw on "the power of the vortex" to transport themselves instantly anywhere in the realm. It was a dark time. The Avatar was summoned back to Britannia, and ultimately managed to rescue Lord British before the collapse of the Underworld, restoring him to his rightful place on the throne."

-Shine Teachings-

Here are the lessons you can learn at the various shrines:

Dais of Honesty: Whatsoever things are true... Whatsoever things are honest... If there be any virtue think on these things.

Dais of Compassion: No beast is so fierce yet shows a touch of pity. Sweet mercy is nobility's true badge.

Dais of Valor: Tender-handedly stroke a nettle, and it stings you for your pains. Grasp it as a man of mettle, and soft as silk it remains.

Dais of Justice: Justice without force is impotent. Force without justice is tyranny.

Dais of Sacrifice: The universe is so vast and so ageless that the life of one man can only be justified by the measure of his sacrifice.

Dais of Honor: Honor may be assailed, but it can never be hurt. Surprised by unjust force, but not enthralled.

Dais of Spirituality: Throughout this varied and eternal world, soul is the only element. The wealth of the spirit is the only true wealth.

Dais of Humility: The humblest citizen of all the land, when clad in the armor of a righteous cause, is stronger than all the hosts of error.

Mondain: Control must start with the self and expand outward. To be strong one must control oneself first... Thou must control others if it is needed. But thou wilt most of all need control of thyself to be worthy.

Minax: Unbridled passion leads only to chaos... Thou wilt need passion. But thou must limit thy passion, lest balance and order be lost.

Exodus: Diligence without a goal is worthless. Diligence cannot be the goal... Thou wilt need diligence. But thou wilt most of all need a clear vision of thy goal to be worthy.
