Although the legends linking the origins of faeries with Christianity
are probably myths created to support the church, there are many other
legends involving both the little people and the Church. In many
instances a devout priest is able to ward off faeries by declaring
their lack of religion. The sprites, humbled in the face of God,
flee. Other stories tell of Saints who banished maelovant spirits who
had been preventing the construction of some structure, such as a
church or castle. There are also tales of faeries who have not
instantly fled before the threat of religion. In some of these cases,
the faeries seemed concerned about their souls and possible place in
the afterlife. Most are disappointed about what the clergy has to
say. It is interesting to note that there are no tales relating any
friction between faeries and druids or other celtic priests. Witches
and hags are even viewed as being in league with faeries.
