Infestation : Part One
Commander Shelby sat in her office in Starbase 324, contemplating and
wondering. Contemplating new technologies to fight the Borg with. Wondering
if those already developed were enough to fight off their ever-increasing
incursions into outer-lying colony worlds and sparsely populated sectors.
There had been vague reports of two new types of Borg out there, with even
more advanced technology and shielding. One type was of a race of worm-like
beings that had the ability to burrow under planetary shielding. Another
was of an ant-like Borg that had impossibly powerful armor, one that could
withstand several photon and quantum torpedo shots. She had come up with
some solutions. She had trained two special agents, code named "Calvin &
Hobbes", to use advanced "wormmucking" techniques to do away with the
WormBorg, and was also training another agent code named "Susie Derkins".
As to the "AntBorg" she had created a one-being ground vehicle called the
Exterminator ExoPod. She was still a bit ticked off at Riker for not
spacing Locutus when he got the chance, really. But all that went away when
a lieutenant ran in with a transmission from a fringe colony. The Borg.
"Please, *skhzzkx* us! We're under *skzzzk* by the Borg! New Borg
*skzzzzshk* to penetrate planetary shields. WormBorg came from underneath
and were followed by Ant-*skzkzx* EEPs work! Send help!
*skzzzzzzzzzzzzzkshkxxzkskzhzkx*"
Shelby switched off the viewer and cursed. Well, she knew who to send to
take care of this. She opened a signal to her assistant. "Mr. Throo, get
ahold of the Enterprise E and Deep Space 9 for me. Three way."
Sisko answered an incoming message as he again replaced his baseball.
Sisko silently cursed as he saw who was on the other end. "Commander
Shelby, Captain Picard," he said stiffly. "To what galactic deity do I owe
the honor of your call?"
Shelby had turned on her give-me-no-crap-or-I'll-space-your-butt attitude.
"Can it, Captain Sisko. We have a situation on our hands. I'm sending you
two and your ships with our agents Calvin and Hobbes, and some EEPs to
Frathon for special assignment."
Sisko mulled this over for a second. "EEPs? Calvin and Hobbes? Commander,
are you telling me that the Borg have invaded Frathon?"
"That's exactly what I'm telling you. We have confirmation that their new
Borg have been used, and we need to test our new technology against them.
Your ships will deal with the Borg cube in orbit and you will beam down the
agents and some manned EEPs to deal with them."
"Very well," Picard said before Sisko could respond. "By Mr. Data's
estimates, if we both depart now Captain, we will meet with less than an
hour between us, give or take 15 minutes."
Sisko closed the connection immediately, and ran out onto the Ops deck.
"Prepare the Defiant, Chief," he called to O'Brien. "We're going on a
little 'trip'."
Sisko took aim in one of the EEPs and destroyed another AntBorg. He
overheard Picard on the comm-line over the sound over phaser fire.
"HA HA! This is great! I've never had such fun in my life!"
Sisko had to agree. He tapped a control and another AntBorg was targeted.
He shifted his chain phasers over to their next modulation and started
firing. The beams of energy converged on one spot, the head, and the
AntBorg collapsed under the onslaught. The body instantly caught on fire
then exploded. Sisko took a moment to check on special agents Calvin and
Hobbes. The strangest pair in existence, they were. A human child and a
sentient tiger. They looked like they were dancing on the heads of the
WormBorg, artfully dodging phaser beams and the boring mechanisms replacing
the WormBorgs' arms. They radically changed every movement, never allowing
the WormBorg to adapt. Then, they ran out of moves. They were thrown off
the WormBorg, and then held down as the tubules pushed out of the Borgs'
hands, reaching to assimilate them. Sisko and Picard swung around to shoot
the WormBorg off, forgetting about the AntBorg. They each took direct shots
to the midsections and legs, collapsing them.
Up in space, Major Kira Nerys and Commander William Riker led their ships
straight at the Borg cube. Shields were at maximum, and both ships fired a
devastating barrage of phaser beams and quantum torpedoes that would have
instantly destroyed any other ship, even a Jem'Hadar war cruiser. They
veered off as the Borg fired shield destabilizers at their ships. Suddenly,
a second cube shot out of transwarp, firing shield destabilizers at the
ships. Both Kira and Riker cursed as their ships lost all shields.
