Sirens.
By Nic (stardestiny@bigfoot.com)
October 1998.

NOTE:
A poem (of sorts), attempting to capture Spike's emotions during "There Are Crocodiles".

Sirens.

Shock.
Standing by a cold window
Watching the cars flash by
It's raining but I don't hear it, see it
I hear nothing but the sirens
The relentless wailing in my mind, shouting over and over...
That You are dead.

Dead.
I didn't think it was possible, not you
You who fought life at every turn
You who never backed down
You who took every challenge and tore it apart
You who stole my heart...
You were invincible.

But it didn't last
I can see you in my mind, flames dancing around you
I close my eyes
But I can't block out the terrible image
And in my heart, I know I heard you calling
But I wasn't there...
I left you to die.

That's how it was
Us fighting right until the end
Just like we always had
But I didn't think the end would come
Break up, make up, isn't that how our story goes?
Now our story will never finish...
Maybe it's meant to be.

I'll be haunted by you for the rest of my life
You, the only woman I ever truly loved
Through dragons and stuffed cats, vaults and restaurants
From the first moment I saw you
And even when I hated you,
I still loved you...
I always will.

Now there's nothing but a burnt-out shell
Of the place where we loved and fought
Nothing left of You, either
You're only in my memories
And I hear the sirens and my heart is breaking
And I see you in my mind...
And I pray for a miracle.

END.
