The Ultimate Guide to Relationships.
When Soulmates began, Buffy and Angel were the only couple of note
on the brand new show and thus became a single entry under "Fantasy and
Gothic Genre Matches". Over three years later, a look at the Genre
page revealed that almost half of the couples listed come from the Buffy/Angel
universe.
Why do we see so many pairings in this show? Some fan favourites
(such as Willow and Angel) can't even be correlated with onscreen evidence.
Other couples (Cordy/Xander) remain dear to many of us even when the onscreen
relationship is clearly over. And then you have the couples that just sparkle
off the screen because of their chemistry and/or appearance (Buffy/Spike).
I guess the Buffyverse is full of engaging and dynamic characters we
love, who grow and change, and there's so much potential for romance amongst
all of them at their age - young adults on the brink of discovering who
they truly are.
This page has been arranged in the following order.
1) Meant to be (and we only have one entry right now!) -- or are they?
2) Currently an Item, or with A LOT of chemistry, or just perfect.
3) Wishful thinking - but we love them anyway
4) Parted by death or other circumstances
Buffy and Angel
Buffy : The Vampire Slayer
Both misfits in their respective worlds, it seemed inevitable that
they would be drawn together. Buffy, the slayer, the teenage girl whose
duty is to protect. And Angel, the only vampire with a soul. Only together
can they find a peace they both so desire - but can it truly last forever?
No, because of a curse on Angel which prevents him from true happiness.
Update: It seems this relationship was doomed from the start.
For how could a love ever last between them, when Buffy had her entire
life before her yet Angel could not age? We can only hope that after
college, Buffy and Angel will accept that this does not matter, and come
together once and forever.
(Archivists personal hope: Spike should bite Buffy,
they should have a vampiric fling, then Willow and Tara should restore
Buffy's soul so that she and Angel are together forever.)

Willow Rosenberg and Tara MacClay
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
This relationship demonstrates the "soulmates" concept so accurately
and so tactfully. It's not cheesy and over the top. It's not
lust at first sight. It's a connection, from the very first
moment they spoke to each other it was obvious that something existed between
them. Their first spell, drawing on the power of each other through
their joined hands. The sweet shyness on both sides maturing into
a special friendship. "...something that's mine." "I am...Yours."
The words were said well before anything beyond friendship entered the
equation. It was a love that caught Willow unawares, and all the
more sweet because it wasn't expected. It wasn't about anything that's
conventionally associated with a relationship, it was a bond that could
not be denied.
Tara's abduction following their first fight was heartbreaking to watch, and
we can only hope that Willow's new powers don't drive a wedge between them....

Buffy Summers and Spike (William the Bloody)
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
A romantic relationship between this pair was virtually non-existent, besides "Something Blue" when, under a spell, they became betrothed. What was truly amazing was that Buffy actually thought that
Spike would be okay with her continuing to be a Slayer and killing all
his friends after they're married.
They were very territorial about each other. Buffy hated Dru, Spike
hated Angel. Neither could stand to even hear about the other's ex. But
it didn't seem to matter what they fought about, they resolved all of their
bickering by kissing. It was a memorable episode and warmed the hearts
of Buffy/Spike 'Shippers everywhere. And it was only the start.
In a series of events reminiscent of Xena and Ares, Spike fell in love with Buffy. Completely, utterly, obsessively. He's changing for her, even threatening to stake Dru (his love for 200 years!) Is it true love? It seems to be, given Spike's heartbreaking reaction to Buffy's sacrifice at the end of Season 5. Just when it seemed that Buffy was beginning to forgive him, and let him in...both into her house and perhaps her heart.
Shippers are holding their breaths to see what becomes of this intense, sexy and beautiful relationship. She hates him, but she's drawn to him and can't stay away. Spuffy is rocking the net.
"If you're not fighting with Buffy or kissing Buffy, you really aren't
in the mix.... A lot of fans want to see the two characters come together.
It would be very interesting." ~ James Marsters (Spike)

Angel and Cordelia Chase
Angel
The longer "Angel" continues, the more popular this couple becomes.
They couldn't have been more different, but Cordelia just barges into Angel's
life as if she owns it, and he doesn't put up much resistance. Together,
along with help from various friends, they learn about each other, becoming
true friends and calling each other family.
Angel played the part of the jealous boyfriend perfectly but
unintentionally, worried for her reputation, and his reaction when she was
sucked into an alternate universe was beautiful to watch. He loves her.
But then Groosalugg and Fred wandered into the scene and all of a sudden, that
Angel/Cordy love was gone. We hope it will be back.
Wesley and Gunn
Angel
Where do we start with this? An ambiguous beginning surprisingly
developed into a deep bond. Wesley took a bullet for Gunn and from that
point on, they were best buddies, sharing a secret relationship that Angel
could never be a part of.
Two men from completely different worlds, yet they understand each other,
and it's unbelievably cute to watch them together. And I still want to know
what Wes was using the handcuffs for....
Gunn/Wesley
Buffy Summers and Rupert Giles
Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
You have to admit, they already act like a married couple! They
are very cute together and treat each other well and with respect.
Also, their is Giles' absolute devotion to Buffy to consider. He
cares for her and she cares for him. The Watcher and the Slayer could
be perfect.... (especially now that Angel's gone...!)
Buffy and Giles
Darla and Drusilla
Angel
Evil, pure evil, or so they seem, and they have the erotic-vampire
relationship down to a T. After all they've shared, the fact that only the
two of them remained together out of the 'family of four' and you begin to
realise that these are the ones with the lasting bond.

Buffy Anne Summers and Riley Finn
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
Ding, Dong, Riley's Gone! <-- This happy reaction came from a
wealth of people, both Shippers and non-shippers alike. In the opinion
of many, he was never right for her. But if you believed that Buffy and
Riley were meant to be, then read on...
Buffy is the Slayer. Riley is an Agent for a secret government
organization known as the Initiative. Both keep their identities
a secret. By day, Buffy is a college freshman, while Riley is a junior
and psychology TA. Though their relationship began with Buffy dropping
psychology books on Riley's head, since then they've become a couple and
learned about each others' secrets. And now, they seem almost too
happy in love....
However, Riley didn't recognize that Buffy's soul had gone missing
in that episode where she and Faith switched bodies, which proved for many
that he and Buffy are body-mates, not soulmates.

Angel and Kate
Angel
Another relationship that didn't even take off. Maybe because Kate
was too boring? Or too annoying? *g* (My apologies to the Kate fans!)
A vampire with a soul, and an LA homicide detective. An odd pairing,
but for the first few episodes, they flirted, had fun, she even took him
on a date of sorts. Then she found out he was a vamp, and moved away from
him. She even drove a stake through him, to kill another vampire, although
he survived. ("You missed." "No I didn't") Then her dad was killed by vampires,
and she tries to hate him. But they still have chemistry when they're together.

Cordelia Chase and Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
Buffy, and then Angel
Their relationship seems to be inverted compared to the stereotype
young girl/older man relationship. It seems that the teenaged Cordy is
more worldly than Wesley is! The first time we see Wesley on "Buffy", he's
the wussy Watcher with the "Pierce Brosnan-y eyes" sent to overlook Buffy
and according to Buffy's previous Watcher (Giles), he has "the emotional
maturity of a
blueberry scone." His first few goodbye kisses with Cordy were flukes
and both were rather disappointed. He returned to England.
On "Angel", he returns once again, this time,
clad in black leather and sporting quite a few weapons. The Council had
fired him for losing both the Slayers under his care. With no real job,
he now works as a "rogue demon hunter". (Cordy: "What's a rogue
demon?") Cordy, trying to "smooch every damn frog in this kingdom", plants
her lips on him the moment he arrived, before she even realized who he
was.
Strangely, that kiss had more chemistry than their goodbye kisses.
Did she ruin those kisses on purpose? Finally, when Angel and Wesley were
saving Cordy from a demon: "You! Butcher an innocent girl, will you? (pushes
his glasses back on his nose) I'm going to thrash you to within an
inch of your life…..and then I'm going to take that inch!" Okay, so he
could possibly be the cheesiest guy you've ever met on "Buffy" or "Angel"
but he was willing to do anything for Cordy. In more recent times, however,
Wesley has turned his devotion to Gunn.

Willow Anne Rosenburg and Angel
Buffy, the Vampire Slayer
Okay. Hmm. Where to begin.. Well, they would just have cute kids.
Sure, he's a vampire and dating (well he was dating) her best friend,
but those are just hurdles. The best way I can think of to say this is,
they just seem... right. Weird, I know, but right. It could be that David
and Aly are just good friends and that projects, but in somehow (in the
whole three minutes of screen time they've had together) something..
warm just comes across. Maybe I'm just off my rocker, but they could be
soulmates.

Rupert Giles and Joyce Summers
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
Giles is like a father to Buffy, and Joyce is her mother, so why not
make the happy family official? *g*
The relationship between Giles and Joyce began on rocky ground, as
she resented him for stealing her daughter away, encouraging Buffy in a
dangerous occupation. Yet their shared concern for Buffy drew them
closer in friendship, and in the episode "Band Candy", under the influence
of a mind-altering substance, Giles and Joyce did the wild thing.
They were later embarrassed, but their relationship has never been
resolved one way or another....
Of course, a good death puts an end to any kind of potential
relationship. Farewell, Joyce, we'll all miss you....
Xander and Cordelia
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
Xander and Cordelia, complete opposites. Two people drawn together
inexplicably. A relationship begun in trauma, a relationship that
continued (for a while) for no definable reason. Both were shunned
by their friends, but Xander and Cordelia didn't care. That's what
made it so sweet! Not to mention the chemistry they had together...woah.
Now if only they would get back together....sigh.... (This relationship,
like that of Buffy and Angel, depends upon the merging of two separately
successful shows. Which isn't very likely.)
It's very interesting to note that NO ONE has suggested Xander and Anya
as soulmates. Sure, they've been dating for over a year, but I don't
see any chemistry. Do you?

Willow and Oz
Buffy : The Vampire Slayer
He was her first. First love can be so sweet, so touching, and
innocent. Willow was a shy young woman drawn into a world of darkness
and vampires, who just happened to fall in love with what she presumed
was a kindred soul. They met as "gifted students" but soon learnt
each other's secrets, such as Oz's werewolf tendencies.
"My boyfriend's in the band!" is a shining example of what this relationship
first meant to Willow - she was so happy to be loved and fell in love.
Until Oz met another vampire and broke her heart.
And so, it ended, sadly, but honestly. Perhaps they weren't soulmates
but they will always be special to each other, as that magical "first love".
"New Moon Rising" is one of the saddest - yet most honest - episodes many
'shippers have seen.

Spike (William the Bloody) and Drusilla
Buffy/Angel
From the first moment we saw them together, it was obvious that Spike
was madly in love with Dru. They had a relationship that can be described
as erotic, and Spike would have done anything for his insane "pet".
Yet when Drusilla became stronger, she decided she no longer needed Spike
and teased him through flirtation with Angel. Spike finally kidnapped
her away, but she left him soon after and the beautiful relationship is
no more.
The final stake in their relationship came when Spike threatend to stake
Dru in front of Buffy, in an unfortunate attempt to prove to Buffy how much
he loved her. Given that their amazing history has been pushed aside for
Spike's love for the Slayer, he must be in love.

Rupert Giles and Jenny Calender
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer
The Witch and the Watcher. The only person Giles ever loved (in
a romantic sense). Destroyed in a fit of passion. Giles and
Jenny!
He was stuck in the past surround with ancient tomes and forbidden
prophecies. She was a Techno Pagan hidden in the information age. He's
a Watcher sworn to protect the world at all cost. She's a gypsy with the
power over the soul itself.
Their relationship was a tragedy, one that cannot be undone (unless,
of course, you belong to the Order of Denial!)

Cordelia Chase and Alan Francis Doyle
Angel
Another silly tragedy. (Why are there so many half-dead
couples on this list?)
Cordelia... Sunnydale's former Prom Queen and newest resident of the
City of Angels. Doyle... an Irish half-demon with a penchant for
drinking, gambling, and getting visions of the future sent directly from
the Powers That Be. They couldn't be more different. They couldn't
be more perfect.
He was attracted to her from the start, but it took her awhile to see
past his bad fashion sense and discover the true hero within. According
to Doyle himself, Cordelia was a bright spot in his life. What was
really sweet about this pair is seeing the
cheerleading princess ignore the fact that Doyle was half-demon. It
was a secret Doyle kept from her, sprouting from the fear of losing another
girl because of his lineage. The result: she slaps him. Their first/last/only
kiss had a bright
blue glow. Doyle used the kiss to transport his gift of having visions
from the PTB (powers that be) to Cordy. He had decided to give his most
precious possession to her before he died. We see her in the next episode
looking for something to remember him by. (One might also note that Doyle's
the only love interest of Cordy's that was non-human.)
Here's hoping that Doyle will one day return to his lovely Princess
'Delia. For they would be a match made in heaven!
[Your archivist lives in hope that Cordy will one day
get back together with Xander but admits that Cordy and Doyle were really
touching. Cordelia, for all her airs, is drawn to men of the same
kind - real people.]
