Evanel Sedai
Blue Ajah
Name: Lady Evanel Mainei Jhuodin
Ajah: Blue
Homeland: Shienar
Talents:
1-sensing/seeing ta'veren 2-traveling 3-viewing
Deep in the heart of his fortress, Lord Dronell Jhuodin held the newborn infant, murmuring a lullaby, as he rocked the baby next to the hearth. Another daughter, and all hope for sons now lost. This little one, the third, had been a dangerous gamble by his beloved Lady Evaline. Against his better judgment, she had insisted on baring one last child in hopes of giving her Lord an heir. The midwife had assured him his wife would live, but she was also certain that Evaline would never survive another. Gazing down at the innocent face of his newest daughter, Lord Jhuodin smiled contentedly. His wife had breathed the child's given name as he took her in his arms, as was her duty for daughters. "Evanel." His was the privilege of giving a middle name. The eldest was Lisani Rahien, with hair the color of the sky at sunrise. The next had been Shanai Avronia, her eyes as sharp as a bird of prey from the beginning. As if his thoughts summoned them, the elder girls crept into the room to get a look at their new sister. They were much older, twelve and nine, different as hawk and dove. He wondered what surprises his little 'Evi' would bring.
On her naming day, as husband and wife stood holding their child in the presence of all who lived within their lands, Lord Jhuodin's solemn declaration of the babe's name startled observers…and his wife. "I Proclaim, that this child shall be known to all as 'Evanel Mainei Jhuodin'." (How wise could it be to give one's daughter a middle name that translated as 'knife maiden'?)
Evi was 'indulged' as a child, though not spoiled for all that she was allowed to do things that most girls would not have been. (Weapons training and learning the 'male' business of running a Shienaran Holding interested her, leaving the management of household affairs to her sisters, who sought after such things). As a result, she developed the habit of wearing narrower-than-normal skirts divided for riding, button down shirts and Cavalry-style hard-soled boots (unless formality demanded more conventional dress). She was even allowed to accompany her father on several missions to strike at bands of trolloc raiders, and was always present when he went to oversee his chattels.
At fourteen, Evi's parents reluctantly handed her over to the tower to train. Born with the spark, she hadn't shown signs of channeling till a sister from the tower 'noticed' her. There was little love lost between her family and the Aes Sedai that tested her for the ability (though they allowed it out of respect for the bond shared between the guardians of the blight-border and the White Tower). Their protests that she was too young to leave her home yet, fell on deaf ears. Carted to the tower, Evi was unhappy, at first, but once she had her first taste of 'the fullness of the one power', she was snared by the siren's song of Saidar. Her training began in earnest and the Tower became her whole world. She devoured every morsel of knowledge imparted to her. Once she had earned ring and shawl, Evanel Sedai devoted herself (as all good sisters of the blue ajah do) to her chosen objective. Her personal calling became the careful and sensitive task of beginning to turn the attitudes of the 'unenlightened' from hatred or misgiving to, if not exactly 'hospitable', a forbearance of the tower's inhabitants.
Evanel has deep russet hair that would flow almost to her knees if she did not keep it braided and wrapped cap-style on her head. Though she has the ageless look of all Aes Sedai, a delicate silvery trace is beginning to show at her right temple. Her gray eyes are reminiscent of mists that blanket the mountain passes on early spring mornings in her native land. She has a strong chin and jaw, delicate nose and high, well-defined cheekbones. She is tall for a Shienaran woman, almost as tall as some of the men (abt 5'10"). She moves with a smooth, thrifty grace and is not prone to restlessness or showing much emotion in her demeanor. Her eyes and mouth give away only what she wishes others to see.
Evanel Sedai has no warder. She feels no need to have one when she can protect herself with the one power…and, if compelled by necessity, with a sword or dagger. She practices often, to keep her muscles toned and her dexterity effortless. The Shienaran blade Evi uses is sized and balanced specifically for her and, after using it for so long, she would have difficulty using any other foil. Most combatants would find it equally as difficult to use Evi's sword because of a unique design structure given to it by the metal-smith engaged to devise it.
Evanel Sedai wears two rings, always. The first, her great serpent ring, she wears on the third finger of her left hand, to represent that she is dedicated to the Tower above all. The second, her personal signet, she wears on the thumb of her right hand, to represent her pride in the faithful battle-brothers she no longer rides with in their war with the shadow. It is inscribed with her titles and is set with a ruby, carved and inlaid with a rearing stallion in onyx over mother of pearl lightning in the background (a replica of house Jhuodin's banner). The Inscription reads: Lady Evanel Meinai Jhuodin of Shienar, Sealed Head of House Jhuodin, Maiden-blade of the
Blight-border, Defender of the Flame of Tar Valon, Keeper of the Key to the Dragon-wall.
