High (altitude) Motel 6
Thanks, Liz!
Gist of problem, here: My family reunion in 10 days is in Big Bear, California, in the coastal mountain range near San Bernadino. Elizabeth cannot stay with others in big rented houses because of her celiac disease. (We don't want to be mad at nieces and nephews who walk into our bedroom with bagel or Danish in hand, unaware of what that could do to their aunt's day.) The closest reasonable place, we thought, was down the mountains in Highlands, California. Everything in Big Bear was much more expensive.
My wonderful sister came to the rescue. "Try an Internet search at www.motel6.com." (No, this is not an endorsement; I am just being factually accurate with enough detail to add verisimilitude to the story.) Lo and behold! there is a Motel 6 in Big Bear with a few rooms still available on the nights we need, at a reasonable price. Problem solved (whew!).
Long plane trip today, from Tampa via Nashville to Los Angeles, and then driving to Newport Beach to stay with my parents. Tomorrow: get library books; schmooze with parents (my children's grandparents); drive to Phoenix.

High desert
We've been with Elizabeth's mother, Peggy Zitzewitz, for the last few days in Medanales, New Mexico. Yesterday was the memorial service for Dave Zitzewitz. We've seen a number of Dave's relatives Elizabeth and I haven't since 1990 (Dave and Peggy's wedding) or 1991 (a trip to Three Lakes, Wisconsin). Medanales is at 5600 ft. above sea level. I don't sleep well at high altitude, and the first night (which was Thursday, in this case) I woke up several times. Altitude and stress, probably. Elizabeth is groggy the first day here, so I drove from the Albuquerque airport. The congregation members at the church in Espanola said some very nice things about Dave.
That paragraph above probably reflects my mental organization this trip. My kids lost a grandfather. Damn.
