Aphrodite is also called Cyprus or Cytherea because She was first established in these islands off Greece. She was born from the semen of the disembodied genitals of Uranus after the genitals landed in the ocean. She emerged from the ocean riding to shore in a scallop shell. Some legends say She is the daughter of Zeus and Dione, the sea goddess; others say She was born from an egg dropped into the Euphrates river brought ashore by fish and hatched by doves. Her husband is Hephaestus, the crippled god of smithcraft.
Aphrodite freely shared her love with many men, divine and mortal. Two of her most famous affairs were with the god of war, Ares, and with the beautiful, young dying and resurrecting vegetation god, Adonis.
She was not discreet in her affair with Ares, and her enraged husband made a gold net and caught the lovers, naked and intertwined, and put them on public display to humiliate them. The affair with Ares can be interpreted that love, beauty and passion are best mated with craftsmanship and when mixed with violence, disaster results.
Aphrodite fell in love with Adonis' beauty and hid him in a chest and gave the chest to Persephone for safekeeping. Persephone peeked into the chest to see what She was guarding, immediately fell in love with Adonis and refused to give him back to Aphrodite. Zeus was called in to settle the disagreementthe ruling was that Adonis could live one-third of the year by himself, one-third of the year with Persephone, and one-third of the year with Aphrodite. Each year, Adonis dies while hunting wild boar.
Aphrodite's free loving nature was incompatible with Greek intellectualism, and the Greek's divided her characteristics into Urania (who ruled spiritual, platonic love) and Aphrodite Pandemos (the Aphrodite of the commoners), who ruled the uninhibited, sexual love (in this aspect, she was also called Porne which means "the titillator").
Aphrodite is erotic, beautiful, uninhibited, desirous, desirable, and love itself. She is the sex goddess and death goddess who symbolizes sex, passion, love and nudity without shame; love and passion in all aspectsart, music, dance, celebration, etc. In worshipping Aphrodite, couples would go to Her temple gardens and, after ritual purification, would please Aphrodite by pleasing each other.
When Aphrodite influences a relationship, her power goes beyond the romantic and sexual love to include deep friendship, understanding, rapport and the connection of souls.
Aphrodite's symbols are the scallop shell, woman's genitals, the dolphin, doves, lovebirds, swans, golden apples, pomegranates and roses. Other symbols are any objects that symbolize love. Her native incense is frankincense, but in ritual, you can use your imagination. The color for ritual candles for Aphrodite are red or orange.
Invocation of
Brigit
by Diyana
Come Brigid of
the Flame
Come to us in your Maiden aspect
As the Muse
Ignite our inspiration with your fire
And teach us to embrace and honor our shadow side,
For from our shadow side comes our creative power.
Come to us as
the Mother
The Smithcraft.
Light the fire of our souls.
Show us that as women we are all creators.
Like you, we can create wonderful things
And we can create our own reality.
And come to us
as the Healing Crone.
Warm our bodies, heal our illnesses and wounds
With your loving flame.
Teach us in the ways of the healing arts
That we may heal ourselves and others.
Brigid, we
invoke thee
Maiden, Mother, Crone
Come into our circle
Join us this night as we honor you
And honor ourselves.
The Queen of
the Celts
a song by Sunny
The Queen of the
Celts
The Bright Arrow they named her
For 10,000 years, she ruled heaven and earth
From hillsides with shamrocks strewn
She lights the sun and the moon
Bright One your flame burns eternally in us.
The Queen of the
Celts
Is a Goddess of Poetry
From her cauldron of fire, she grants us a song
Inspired by her mystery
We dream in beauty
Bright One your flame burns eternally in us.
The Queen of the
Celts
Is a Goddess of metalwork
The tools of the crafter are learned by her side
When of healing you are in need
Call on the fires of Brid
Bright One your flame burns eternally in us.
The Queen of the
Celts
Is a Goddess, we know it's true
And Patrick, himself, couldn't banish her name
So they made her a saint instead
She ruled as she always had
Bright One your flame burns eternally in us.
Bright One your flame burns eternally in us.
