Dark Angel: Dawg Day Afternoon

Joshua's attempt to see Annie again lands both of them in danger when a gang of thugs spots him and forces the pair into the sewers, where Max must go to try to rescue them before the police catch up with them.

There's something about this story that means it's not as strong as maybe it could be. All the elements come together nicely; Max, Logan, Alec and Joshua have forged a strong bond together and work well as a team, and even Sketchy gets in on the action a bit. Yet still somehow you expect more. Maybe it's the absence of something approaching a sub-plot, with Max's enforced separation from Logan not paying any huge dividends (although Logan still seems pointlessly jealous of Alec) and White's ongoing campaign making progress while we learn nothing more about his ultimate goals. Maybe it's that this series loves its sewer sets so much that it keeps using them in stories and wandering about in dank tunnels is getting a bit old now.

The return of Annie is welcome, not only providing some happiness for Joshua which the poor guy really deserves, but also allowing for a shock ending that I feel I should have seen coming. The fact that I didn't makes it that much stronger, not to mention Joshua's reaction, which will hopefully lead to trouble further down the line. The fact remains, though, that this story is playing for time a little bit as White builds up the public's mistrust and hatred of transgenics. It's important that this happens in stages rather than being an overnight change, but I find myself hoping things will move along a little quicker from here on in. This isn't a bad story, but it doesn't really expand anything or serve a particularly useful function, which is a shame.
