Earth: Final Conflict: 'Heroes & Heartbreak'

A scientist enlists Augur's help to complete a working weapon which the Taelons intend to use to wipe out a large Jaridian fleet.

There's a problem with this episode that is very difficult to pinpoint, but somehow it seems very uninvolving at the beginning. As it moves on, it does build to an impressive and exciting climax, but it seems to take a while to get there.

The idea of using portal technology to send an energy pulse to a distant planet is a clever one, and despite its effect on Earth may be the only defence the human race has, so it will be interesting to see how the war progresses from this point. On top of this, Liam is given more reason to question Da'an's loyalties, and Zo'or becomes more determined to terminate the Resistance. Of course, the fact that Sandoval has no luck at all in this episode may hold him back. I mean, there seem to be no guards anywhere at the top secret Taelon project that can be reached by a simple portal trip. The fact that the Liberation members even get in is pretty poor. They even enter the portal building through a revolving door! Couldn't someone well positioned pick them off one by one?

The other main bugbear about Heroes & Heartbreak is the 'relationship' between Augur and Wu, which is incredibly badly drawn. They work together as teammates, they have a meal, they have sex, then suddenly they're deeply in love. It renders any emotional implication of the end totally dead as you don't believe these people care for each other as much as they claim. The fact that there's no real chemistry and Wu is a heartless bitch only makes things worse.

Still, the whole wormhole/Jaridians/exciting finale stuff is fantastic, so watch the episode for that. Also, Lisa Howard's pregnancy is written into the show in a clever and fun way that is worth waiting for. Just avoid over the Augur love interest rubbish.
