Renee makes the truly inspiring decision to break a murderer out of prison so she can examine an Atravus and find a way to kill it.
After a series of bonehead stunts this season, it seems from this episode that Renee is learning nothing from her experiences. Now she's off breaking serial killers out of prison. Why? So she can get the opinion of a murderer in how to kill an Atavus. Quite why she can't just acquire a suitably large explosive device to blow the things to piece, we may never know. After all, a bunch managed to get destroyed in the opening episode of the season. How come that doesn't work now?
The 'Dr Death' character is, however, well played by Margot Kidder, sinister, vicious but oddly smooth with it and almost likeable. She certainly comes across as dangerous, even if she never shows any desire to harm humans at any point, leaving Street's protests looking a little strange. They've killed hybrids before, so why the qualms about experimenting on one to find out how it ticks?
Attempts to find more depth in both Street and Renee result in endless discussions where Renee is told she's an idiot and must come to terms with all the stupid mistakes she's made. Why has Street not mentioned this before? And how come after telling Renee that she's made her last mistake and she's leaving, Street keeps popping up in time to bail her out of trouble. I'd just stroll off and leave her to it. The series also continues to be incredibly frustrating in the way that once more Renee makes no progress whatsoever. At least you got a sense of progress sometimes in previous seasons, but she can't make any inroads into destroying the Atavus now.
And then there's Sandoval. Once again he's determined to betray the aliens, wanting to know how to kill them. This time they actually seem to be more on his side, but evidently he doesn't trust them. We've done this concept so many times now that it's really getting old. Throw in a bunch of obvious plot holes, one of which is even pointed out by a character, ie how come the doctor can be lost so long with locator nanobots inside her, amongst others and there's once again little reason to recommend this. The way is open for a return engagement from the doctor, but if we have to wait for her to pop by with a way to kill the Atavus, let's hope it's very soon and all this can be over.
