An atavus is released from stasis and Renee follows her through time to stop her from killing.
God, this was puzzling. I didn't get the impression of any time travel going on for quite a while into this story, so I was wondering where Renee had found a bunch of monks with sexist attitudes, a poor grasp of current affairs, and a fine love of medieval torture instruments. The monk Renee then accidentally brings with her on her trip across time is more of a pain than a useful ally, spending most of his time looking shocked at how forward and tough Renee is. Of course, there's a nice little bit of thinking going on as Renee meets Howlyn for (his) first time and we discover why he finds himself so drawn to her in the future.
Take out the time travel, though and we've seen this story plenty of times before: there's an atavus on the loose killing people and Renee has to stop it. Things don't really change from this pattern much, with plenty of leaping through portals and not a vast amount of anything imaginative. The running through time thing doesn't seem to have inspired the writer to do anything very different.
On top of all this, what's going on with Juda? She hasn't been in the show for ages and this week she's even injured offscreen. Is the budget now that low? I mean, even Von Flores is barely more than a bit part player in this episode and Renee running around simply isn't enough to hold anyone's attention.
