A chemical shipment to Never Never Land crashes as a result of a strange creature making the truck swerve. When Frank back-steps to avert the pollution that results, he finds the senior Backstep staff very cagey about exactly what is going on and determines to uncover their secret.
This particular episode doesn't hold up very well to close scrutiny. Once you start trying to work out why Talmadge and Mentnor want their secret kept, it's difficult to understand their motives when it is finally brought into the open. I mean, it's not the worst thing in the entire world.
Slow-moving in places, EBEs does actually build to something more substantial, with a clever twist at the end that's completely unexpected, with the whole episode trying to lead the viewer down the wrong path and succeeding well. Having said this, I did feel rather short-changed by the whole thing, and slightly cheated of what promised to be a more interesting plotline.
With Frank trying to chase down aliens, it seems odd that he doesn't appear to be aware that the Backstep technology was obtained via the Roswell crash. I was sure this had been made public to the entire Backstep team from the beginning. Maybe I'm just remembering it wrong.
Overall, it's at least an inventive and original idea, something that's been rather lacking lately from the series, but it somehow just fails to catch alight.
