Mulder begins to experience strange abilities that threaten end his career and life when an artefact is discovered that may prove the seeds of human life originated on another planet.
It's been a fantastic season for The X-Files, and we can only hope that this cliffhanging season finale is not the shape of things to come in its final year. After the effective revelations and explanations of the Two Fathers two-parter, Chris Carter and co-theorist Frank Spotnitz throw in another twist to the series arc that it really doesn't need this late in the day. I mean, isn't it enough that there's an alien assault force on the way?
At least with prior conspiracy storylines similar ideas started to join together to make a coherent whole. This one just seems tacked on for novelty value. Despite all the usual guest stars being in this episode, not one of them gets to do anything worthwhile, and their motivations all remain decidedly cloudy.
But that's nothing compared to the plot. There's nowhere near enough explanation as to what is going on here, and with everything Carter and Spotnitz have to work from now, you'd think they'd be able to piece together a coherent narrative. Now I admit that this is only part one and therefore mainly set-up, but even Gethsemane (the least successful season-ender to date) gave people more of a reason to watch the rest of the story after the summer break. I really couldn't care less what happens from here on in, as I'm not totally sure I understand any of it yet. A horribly muddled mess that has a couple of good ideas in it, which are totally lost in the gibberish.
