ELVEN MAGE ESCAPES CAPTURE IN PUBLIC STREET

   [Church]

An elf identified only as Sarkis barely avoided being

arrested two days ago in the street outside the Dragon's Inn.

As described by Millicent Hirsley, 45, who witnessed the

events, the elf's appearance drew immediate attention from

bystanders.  Dressed in shredded and burnt purpose robes, Sarkis

carried a staff topped with a bluish crystal orb.
According to Hirsley, on-lookers in the crowd started

shouting at Sarkis, calling him a "witch," and a "warlock."

"Sure looked like one," Mrs. Hirsley commented, "real demon-

spawn."

Both Republica and Church troops soon arrived on the scene to

take control of the situation.  Lieutenant Torquemada commanded

the Church Inquisitors, who attempted to arrest Sarkis.  The mage,

however, took one shot at his potential captors and teleported

from the scene.

"They're still hunting for him, I'm sure," Hirsley said.

"Gotta rid this town of those filthy magic-users."

CITY GUARD FINDS BODIES OUTSIDE GATES

   [Company of the Mancatchers]
John Hilton, 33, volunteer guard at the city gates, reported

the discovery of two unidentified bodies just outside the city

walls yesterday morning.

A third man lay nearby, severely beaten.  The survivor was
taken immediately to Church healers for treatment and questioning.

"He couldn't even talk," Hilton reported, "just had this

terrible expression on his face, like he had seen the worst thing

imaginable."

STRANGER SAVES WOMAN FROM FIRE

   [Saga]

A fire just off the Avenue of Triumph almost claimed one life

last night.  If not for the quick intervention of an unnamed

stranger, Elspeth Varney, 33, wife and mother of two would have

died in a fire that claimed the Varney family's two story house.

The unidentified man dashed into the burning building to

rescue Varney; on-lookers report that his clothing did not seemed

burned when he existed the building.

After successfully removing Mrs. Varney from the dangers of

the fire, the stranger healed her.

"I don't know who he was," said David Varney, 34, Mrs.

Varney's spouse.  "I'm just glad he showed up when he did."  Mr.

Varney would not comment on reports that the stranger gave him

five rubies after the fire to replace the house and its

furnishings.

PROCTOR JOHN REPORTED ABSENT AT GRAND INQUISITOR'S FORMAL DINNER

   [Church]

Proctor John has departed from Montfort to tour the

countryside before traveling to Bleckner for the coronation of

King Robert I, heir to the late King Duarte II.

The Proctor's departure was announced by Grand Inquisitor

Blayne last night at a formal dinner at the Church of the

Redeemer.

The dinner saw another announcement of interest to the

populace of Montfort.  Deacon Geod and the Mageguards, stated the

Grand Inquisitor, have found the cause of and a cure for the

blight that has stricken farmers in the Montfort-area, leading to

a famine.

Attendees at the dinner reportedly included:  Captain Lattman

of the Blackskulls; Lord Aeschere Scyld, a nobleman visiting

Montfort; Vinash, a Templar of Sh'aljien and childhood

acquaintance of the missing High Inquisitor Semareth; Laurelyn

Hillrover, storyteller to the Young Guardians; and three

individuals who previously were reported as arrested by the Grand

Inquisitor -- Kitrina Tvyvar of the Montfort MIME, Linnell Seris

formerly of the Weavers' House, and Thomis Parch.

The Grand Inquisitor also introduced his 'companion,' the

Lady Selene, to the dinner party.

***GOSSIP:  WHO'S NEW IN THE DRAGON'S INN*************************

It has been a relatively slow period in the Dragon's Inn the

past couple of weeks, though some established threads have picked

up new players.  For instance, a couple of new characters have

alighted on the fringes of the [Amulet] thread.  Neesha (Heidi

Hough) lent a hand to Raven(m) (Nick Rodgers) not long after his

meeting with Laurelyn Hillrover.  Furthermore, Jacelyn

(cll@pl.jaring.my), a/k/a "Jace" -- a young girl disguised as a

young boy with unknown connections to the mysterious lady Sa'Eve

-- has arrived in Montfort to "prove" herself.  On the other side

of the continent, Jadin (CabotVT2@plainfield.bypass.com) appeared

in Pas du Mer (six separate times, by my count), with a silver

flute, to join the [Sapphire] thread.

A few new threads have been introduced.  The arrivals of

Atran (jmarum@mail.telepac.pt), his brothers Triun and Bheiun,

and Atran's adopted daughter Yar have initiated the start of the

[Saga] thread.  In his wanderings in Montfort, Atran stumbled

upon the injured Ura-shi (eshin@ftech.co.uk).  Additionally,

Brother Marcellus (jgroszkiew@tscwo.com) opened the [Mercy]

thread with efforts to feed the hungry, in direct competition

with the Church of the Redeemer.

Yet a third thread seems to be forming round Godfroi de

Bouillon (shaun@thebes.demon.co.uk).  Godfroi, a prince of the

Mergovian bloodline, is recruiting mercenaries for an as-yet-

undescribed quest.  He has approached Selayha and Trisstree

(aslandfg@aol.com).  The first of these ladies rode into town on

a unicorn; the second, a Drow swordswoman, took great offense

when Godfroi mistook her cloaked form for that of a man.  Nazeer

Shalam'Bazeel (Nelson@ultrix.demon.co.uk), a well-armed young

man, has asked Godfroi about the proposed quest, and has placed a

special request for first dibs on any "ballemtile stones."

Remaining miscellaneous new characters include, in no

particular order:  Calyndour Ath' Rauthan (gmanas@mastnet.net),

a/k/a Blackgaurde, with an impressive three-foot mohawk, who

seeks a Drow lady named Kauspex; Vermilion and Clyde
(dhensley@polaris.mindport.net), the first of whom wants an

apprentice "Willing to Learn Some Magic;" Marcus Allurus

(wildcat@prysm.net), who looks to be a refugee from ancient Rome;

Random (research@mnl.sequel.net), an elegantly cultured amnesiac

who has approached Karyn Silversheen; a mysterious elf named

Luminar (kentse@ix.netcom.com), who seems to have spent most of

his life underground and has fallen in with Irnaan; and an

unnamed individual (pmichael@pi.net) whose autobiography is being

told via various scraps of paper scattered about the Inn like

confetti.

     Others include:  Elsha Thorneguard (gmanas@mastnet.net),

with a phoenix tattoo on her right forearm and a harpoon on her

back; a dusty stranger who seeks to "reestablish contact with

civilization" (araston@slip.net); and Micheal Sardis

(sca00460@mail.wvnet.edu), a tall stately gentleman who must have

wandered into a different Dragon's Inn, to have been able to sink

his teeth into the wrist of the waitress without ending up in a

bubble courtesy of Hugh Rogers' anti-violence wards.

As a final note, we welcome back Rozalia Wulfsdottir

(netrider@spacestar.com), and wish good luck to Nirein

(samsong@earthlink.net), who has come to Montfort in search of --
and bearing sad news for -- her long-missing father, Shan

L'Arain.  Whatever the success of Nirein's quest, we're certain

she will never fail to be cheered by her companions Bougar

Holyndile and Elwynn Evindem.
