The Earth 2 Characters: The Unexpected Hosts
Though classified as a planet capable of sustaining human life, it was believed that G889 had no indigenous life. After crashing on the planet, Eden Advance soon found one of the cargo pods that had been released. When it was discovered that the pod had been ransacked, the belief that G889 was uninhabited was quickly found to be untrue. Though the sounds of bird calls were frequently heard and various members of Eden Advance spoke of "getting used to the bugs", only three forms of indigenous life were seen.
Terrians (Russell Werkman/Brian Steele) The Terrians appear to be the highest form of intelligent life on G889. Though they have a somewhat human form and live in tribes, they do not have the same idea of "society" that humans have. Throughout the centuries, they have formed a bond with the planet which they regard as their "Mother". The Terrians lived in caves and have developed the ability to travel through the earth which is their apparent means of transportation. Other evidences of their communion with the planet is the "Dream Plane", the Terrian "lightning" staffs, and the sunstones (aka Morganite). Not much is known about the Dream Plane; it may be one of their forms of communication, though they do have language. It seems to be primarily used to communicate with non-Terrians and selective ones at that. For reasons never fully explained, the Terrians have chosen to communicate with Alonzo Solace via the Dream Plane. It is through this communication that Eden Advance learns much about the planet and the Terrians. At various times, the Terrians are seen carrying staffs adorned with three different symbols, the meaning of which were never explained. The Terrians were able to produce what they called "lightning" when they touched the staffs with the earth. The lightning staffs apparently were a form of protection since the Terriana used them primarily when feeling threatened. One other use for the lightning was seen by Eden Advance while exploring a Terrian cave. The Terrians caused a formation of stones to "explode" producing veins of brightly colored rocks. Highly energized, Eden Advance was able to use them to provide energy for their generators and vehicles. It was discovered that these sunstones provided yet another form of communication when Morgan Martin, intent on staking a claim, "froze" a one kilometer portion of the planet rich in sunstones. This particular vein was apparently a major part of the "system" when it was discovered that access to the Dream Plane was also broken. It wasn't until this portion of earth was "unfrozen" that the link was re-established. Throughout the years, the Terrians have attempted to create a "link" between themselves and the humans. An early effort of such a link was discovered when Alonzo was rescued from renegade Terrians by a human girl bearing Terrian characteristics. After bringing her back to camp, Eden Advance discovered that her name was Mary and that she was orphaned at a very young age when the very Terrians who attacked Alonzo had some years earlier attacked her settlement and killed her parent. Those Terrians were banished from the tribe and she was raised by the remaining members of the tribe. The link proved ineffective since she assumed too many of the Terrian traits due to her lack of human contact. Shortly after the crash, Ulysses Adair was taken by the Terrians and healed of the Syndrome. In exchange for the healing, Uly was to become a link between Terrians and humans. Though he carried evidence of Terrians traits in his DNA, Uly was unskilled in the ways of Terrian life. For a brief while he was trained by Mary. During "Mooncross", a time when Terrians complete the link between themselves and their "mother", Uly was able to convince the tribe to accept the renegade Terrians back and allow them to "go in" to the earth via a pool in a Terrian cave. This "going in" was apparently an end of temporal life on the planet though not really death. It allowed the Terrians to be completely one with their "mother". Though at first Uly was expected to "go in", he was later returned to Eden Advance with the understanding that he was to be with the Terrians during Mooncross. It is also shown that while the Terrians have evolved into very peaceable creatures who's main philosophy is "to do no harm", they are proven to also "never forgive." When Morgan froze the portion of land containing the sunstones, he inadvertantly froze a Terrian, too. Though he, Bess, and Yale were captured and sentenced to die for their hand in the destruction, Yale, through Mary, convinved the Terrians that he alone was to blame. Morgan and Bess were released and Yale was to "go in". In a discussion with Mary, Yale convinced her that the Terrian way of "never forgiving" wasn't necessarily the right way. He told her to look into her human heart and help him escape his fate. She did and was stripped of her Terrian abilities and banished from the tribe for her efforts. Frightened at losing the only way of life she's ever known, Mary flees into the forest and is not seen again. Uly continues to be a link between humans and Terrians though he never seems to become fully Terrian like Mary.
Grendlers (Jeff Deist and Lisa Ebeyer) Though apparently a sentient species, Grendlers seem to be lower on the evolutionary scale than the Terrians since they do not appear to have the link with the planet that the Terrians have. Traders by nature, Grendlers are not above a "little petty larceny" as evidenced by the missing cargo found in one of their caves. Various members of Eden Advance have traded with them, sometimes to humorous effect (see "Memory Play"). One of their more obvious features in the drool than constantly runs from their mouth (much to Baines' disgust!). When members of Eden Advance became ill from an unknown source, it was discovered that Grendler saliva was the greatest pharmaceutical discovery since penicillin! Other evidences of their apparent sentient nature appear when an scout team is stranded far from camp without supplies. John Danziger and Alonzo Solace follow a Grendler in the hopes of finding their "stash" and some food. When Danziger accidentally kills one of the Grendlers, it was discovered that it was a female . . . and a mother. The remaining Grendler, apparently her mate, haunts the camp until the group shows proper remorse for their actions.
Kobas Kobas appear less sentient than the Terrians or Grendlers. Adept mimics, they appear friendly until provoked. Possessing a highly effective defense mechanism, they can "shoot" their attacker with one of their razor sharp "fingernails" with amazing accuracy. When this happens to Broderick O'Neill, he falls to the ground, apparently poisoned to death. Later, when the same thing happens to Morgan Martin, Eden Advance learns that the koba's stings do not kill but send the victim into a coma-like state from which they will awake in a few days.
