Greetings and Welcome to the Book and Movie review page for the Demeter.
This page is not meant to advertise, or do anything other than let people know what the opinion is from those of us who have read the books listed, or seen the movies.
If you are a member of the Demeter Crew, and would like to have a review for something you have seen or read, e-mail us at the Demeter mail and we will include your thoughts.
As the Demeter is a Science Fiction Fan Club, we will be primarily covering that genre' in this page. NOTE: Demeter does not discriminate, against anyone, though we will reserve the right to avoid putting anything on the webpage that would be defamatory, discriminatory, hateful, or obscene/pornographic.
Having said that, let us go on to the reviews!!
We use Mortar Rounds to rate the Books and Movies (It seemed like the Marine thing to do! Scale is ZERO "0" to Five "5" With five being -buy this book instead of cat food- "Let them eat mice!"
Honor in Chains (I think I got it right) David Weber Yet another in his "Honor Harrington" series this book brings more of the Honor of Space Opera Don't be afraid if you can't read them in order, like most series, each book can stand alone although you will go nuts trying to hunt down the other books in the series! I know! We have ! An interesting set up, and a teasing end to many of the problems Honor has faced...until....and then!!! but wait! I don't want to give it away. An excellent set up for the next book, which I hope to see soon. BTW, Mr. Weber is slated to be one of the guests at Copper Con this year(1999) in Arizona. A strong four mortar rounds!
Space Marines, the movie, I don't recall it having a theatre run in the US, but Tory assures me it did, we found it on Laser CD from an overseas supplier, the movie was fun, and had some action, though the effects were not really high budget, it seems the copy we ordered may not have been...well, lets just say there were funny numbers running the whole time along the bottom of the screen! But, I give it a firm two rounds for fun and Marines, in space...
As to those critics who say too slow, too much this or that, get over it! When was the last time you folks read Great Expectations, starts a bit slow, has a convoluted plot, and lots of adventure, as you get into it. This is entertainment.
Too bad the scale only goes to five rounds, I would not hesitate to give a few extra!
I said we would do this, and here is our first "Guest Review"
Greetings Space Marines!
I would like to add my opinion about the Star Wars Phantom Menace
review. It was without a doubt the best Science Fiction movie I have
ever seen. Between the story line that hummed right along to the
special effects that leaped off the screen, this movie was almost
overwhelming. Definetly need to add more mortar rounds!
I would like to alert everyone about Walter Williams... an incredible
writer of hard core science fiction. In his book "Hardwired" he
combines all the action that you look for in this style of book as well
as the high tech mumbo jumbo that would make Gibson proud. An "must
read" for any fans of Gibson's.
Thanks for giving me a forum for my reviews. And keep up the cool
links.
Dan Williams
