Amtgard is a non-profit educational corporation dedicated to the study and recreation of the medieval and fantasy era and genre of role-playing. It takes the form of a live action role playing (LARP) game that endeavors to recreate individual and group combat, making use of many classes: Archer, Assassin, Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Healer, Monk, "Monster" (many different creatures with lots of different abilities have been created), Paladin (and Anti-Paladin), Scout, Warrior, and Wizard. |
Amtgard weapons are safe, foam padded replicas of the real things. Amtgard battlegames range from tournies and duels (one on one combat) to quests versus monsters and wars between kingdoms that involve hundreds of individuals. All battlegames and scenarioes are covered by a comprehensive set of rules. Overall, Amtgard equipment is much cheaper and easier to make than that of similar organizations such as the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Mind you, I'm not knocking the organization, since those guys are pretty neat too. |
Here in Memphis, TN, the Barony of the Far Woods meets in Audubon Park just south of Southern Avenue at Perkins Extended, across from Theater Memphis. Official meeting times are every Sunday from 12 noon till 5 or 6 p.m. A more detailed set of directions may be found here. |
Amtgard first formed in El Paso, Texas in February of 1983. Since then it has grown to ten kingdoms stretching from Oregon to New Hampshire with smaller groups in such diverse areas as England, Korea, Finland, Sweden, and even Russia. |
