The Celtic Cross is an ancient symbol, the oldest examples of the crosses (found in caves in France) are those engraved or painted on flat pebbles, dating from 10,000 B.C.E.
The equal-armed cross surrounded by a circle symbolizes the balance of female and male forces and the four elements, and the four cardinal directions (four roads). In the center where the lines cross is the hidden fifth Element of Spirit. The surrounding circle is the manifested universe contained within a circle of infinity.
The cross in the wheel has been used as a symbol of the sun and male gods who rule over all things - length, breadth, height and depth.
