Henry III reigned over England for 56 of his 65 years, having been crowned as a youth, following the unexpected, and largely unmourned death of his father John in 1216. When his father died the young king and his supporters faced a very difficult situation.
When Henry finally died, in 1272, his son, Edward was away on Crusade. However an 18-month inter-regnum appears to have passed uneventfully, and Edward was crown as Edward I in 1274.
