Fremantle came into this game with their season still in the balance. A win here, and the correct results elsewhere would have seen them sneak into eighth spot, and their first crack at the finals. A loss could see them slip as low as 12th. For Melbourne, on the other hand, a win would see them finish in 16th, while a loss could see them slipping down to 16th.
This was another disappointing loss for Freo, particularly given the results in the other games. A win to Brisbane, Port Adelaide, or Carlton would have put Fremantle of finals contention, but all three managed to roll over and die, with Carlton blowing a 10 goal lead in order to give Fremantle the opening.
In the end though, Fremantle were not good enough, and the dirtiest man in football, Jeff Farmer, had a great day, kicking, I think, 6 goals altogether, including 4 in the third quarter, before taking himself off because he felt tired.
Final Score : Melbourne 18.11-119 defeated Fremantle 11.13-79
