THE 1998 JETS TEAM PLACES NATIONALLY

Frederiksted, May 21, 1996. It was learned recently that St.Joseph High School, Frederiksted, St.Croix, advanced to the nationals and placed in the upper two-thirds of their division in the JETS TEAMS Competition. Members of the St. Joseph High School team will receive certificates from the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS). The 1998 St. Joseph High School team includes these 7 outstanding students: Kwesi Bleau, Sara Forkey, James Garcia, Muneer Hassan, Chalma Moorhead, Melissa Thurland, and Vanessa Thurland. The team was coached by Brother James A.Petrait, O.S.F.S., a national Presidential Award Winner in Secondary Science Education from the Territories and a science teacher at St.Joseph High School.

The members of the St.Joseph High School JETS TEAMS started pursuing this activity in early February. The main event in this competition was the taking of a 3 hour test by the entire team on a Saturday morning in March. This test consisted of problems in the fields of science and engineering that are encountered by those actually in the field. Just as they work in groups to solve their problems, so do the competing teams across the nation. To prepare for the actual event, the St.Joseph High School team spent many hours working on practice problems in the weeks previous to taking the test. Through efforts and expertise the team has kept up St.Joseph High School's tradition of excellence in the JETS TEAMS competition for the third year in a row!

The JETS organization has its headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia and its JETS TEAMS Competition and other programs have been recognized, commended or endorsed by many societies and organizations including the National Science Foundation, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Science Teachers Association, and National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Besides denoting "teams", "TEAMS" also stands for Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science.
