by
James A. Petrait

On Friday, April 24, 1998, the members of the astronomy class at St. Joseph High school went of a field trip to Arecibo and the Camuy Caves in Puerto Rico. The students; Kwesi Bleau, Sara Forkey, Muneer Hassan, and Melissa Thurland were accompanied by their teacher, Bro. James Petrait, and Fr. Gervasio Malave of St.Joseph Church.

The participants of the field trip were able to observe the insides of our planet at the Camuy Caves and how the outer reaches of the universe are studied by means of the Arecibo Radio Telescope. All were impressed by wonders of God's creation at both locations.

Bro. James Petrait used over $1000. of his national Presidential Award grant to finance the one-day trip. It was greatly enhanced by the presence of Fr.Gervasio Malave, who being from Puerto Rico, was an excellent tour guide. The students will never forget walking around inside the planet Earth in the fantastic Camuy Caves and seeing all of the educational exhibits and the world's largest non-moveable radio telescope at Arecibo which was recently featured in the movie, "Contact".
