THE FIRST ST. JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM
This was the first Science Symposium at St. Joseph High School. It was started and directed by Brother James A. Petrait, O.S.F.S. A Science Symposium is like a science fair except displays are
not required but optional. It is an opportunity for students to share their scientific research projects with others and to be recognized for their scientific accomplishments. Students were able to submit experimental or observational projects or build scientific devices. The first phase of the project was to submit a paper of the results. Then the second phase was for the students to develop a presentation of 8 to 16 minutes in length which was videotaped. The videotape presentations were then sent to 3 judges who ranked the presenters both for their scientific ability and for their ability to communicate their ideas to others. The videotape of the 3
winners was presented to the May meeting of the Home and School
Association.
The winners , project titles, and the prizes that they received at the awards assembly on May 26 are: Zipporah Inniss, First Place, "Geronimo! If Airplanes Had Parachutes" , certificate , Rolodex Organizer, and a copy of the Symposium videotape; Rolando Cruz, Second Place, "Testing for the Presence of Vitamin C", certificate, a solar powered scientific calculator and a copy of the Symposium videotape. Roxanne Hinkson, Third Place, "Planetarium - A Model of the Solar System", certificate, scientific calculator and a copy of the Symposium videotape.
