Welcome to the world of the big guns! Among Civil War military topics, the artillery is often the least understood. The most often asked queston to battlefield guides is "How did they fire the cannon?" The amateur commanders of the day also tended to lack knowledge of artillery tactics and procedures, often with disastrous results. Conversely, well-served and commanded artillery could decide a battle.
This section was designed to give someone with little or no knowledge a basic understanding of Civil War artillery. There are sections on the guns, the crews that served them, and the ammunition they used. Many of the terms in the glossary are described in more detail (terms are in bold). If a term is not explained, the first time it appears in the section it will link to the glossary defination.
