Interested in ancient Greece, Rome, or the Middle East, or the Medieval period, or mythology, or very old coins or paper money or metal weapons or tools? None of these, I hear from a small voice in the back? Then you can be excused while the rest of us discuss these esoterica.
I'm interested in all this stuff. But for right now, I'd like to focus on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. You don't need to believe in the story of the Trojan War to recognize the great importance of Homer's epics to the ancients, and to the development of today's society. To the ancients, Homer's works were somewhat like what the Bible was to the medieval world - important sources of both historical and moral instruction. Many of us can relate better to Homer when his words are supplemented by visual stimuli - drawings, sculptures, cinema, or whatever. Ancient coins, including some rather common and affordable specimens, feature some of the earliest available depictions of the characters and events described by Homer (as well as portraits supposed to show Homer himself). Many other ancient coins were minted by and carry the names of Greek, Trojan, and allied cities described by Homer, and places visited during the Odyssey. Some of the coins may even provide significant evidence about where Homeric events were believed to have occurred.
