Although God created each of us to be part of His family, enveloped in His love, and guided by His purpose, each of us has a problem: we have chosen to "do our own thing." We have disobeyed God. We have sinned against Him. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 (NIV): "for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" God is a holy and righteous god. As much as He loves us and yearns for our companionship, He cannot allow sinful, rebellious people into His presence.
God knew our weakness. He knew that we would struggle with disobedience. He knew that once we had sinned that there was no way that we could "make it up to Him." ( How could we atone for disobedience by being obedient?)
God is merciful. He planned a way for us to be reconciled to Him from the beginning of creation. Scripture tells us in John 3:16 (NIV): "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." As sinners we deserved spiritual death (permanent separation from God). Jesus Christ (God the Son) took the punishment that we deserved by laying down His life so that through our faith in Him our sins are forgiven, removed from us, and utterly forgotten.
How can I fulfill my destiny? By asking Jesus Christ into my heart, making Him the Lord of my life, and inviting God the Holy Spirit to live in me to teach me how to be part of God's family.
