House Joint Resolution No. 1026

A Joint Resolution designating White Cane Safety Day in Oklahoma;
and encouraging citizens to aid in the provision of a safe environment for the blind.

WHEREAS, Oklahoma recognizes the accomplishments of blind citizens in this state; and

WHEREAS, it is necessary for all citizens of this state to be aware of the right to an independent lifestyle for such blind citizens; and

WHEREAS, the white cane is recognized as an aid to the blind in providing independent lifestyles for such blind citizens; and

WHEREAS, it is imperative that sighted citizens respect the white cane as an indicator to use caution for the safety of blind citizens.

Now, Therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives and the Senate of the 1st Session of the 40th Oklahoma Legislature:

Section 1. October 15 of each here is hereby established as White Cane Safety Day in Oklahoma to be commemorated by calling upon the citizens of this state to be aware of the presence of blind persons in their community and to keep safe and functional the streets, sidewalks, public buildings, public accommodations, and other places to which the public is invited, and when appropriate, to offer assistance to such blind persons.
