House Joint Resolution No. 1074

A Joint Resolution designating December 7 of each year as
Oklahoma Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day;
authorizing and requesting the Governor to perform certain duties related to such day;
and providing for codification.

WHEREAS, on December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy and Air Force attacked units of the Armed Forces of the United States stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, approximately 2,400 citizens of the United States were killed and approximately 1,300 citizens of the United States were wounded in the attack on Pearl Harbor; and

WHEREAS, the attack on Pearl harbor marked the entry of the United Sates into World War II; and

WHEREAS, the veterans of World War II and all other citizens of the United States commemorate December 7 in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor; and

WHEREAS, commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor will instill in the citizens of Oklahoma a greater understanding and appreciation of the selfless sacrifice of the individuals who served in the Armed Forces of the United States during World War II.

Now, Therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives and the Senate of the 2nd Session of the 45th Oklahoma Legislature:

SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 98.5 of Title 25, unless there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:

December 7 of each year is designated as "Oklahoma Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day", and the Governor is authorized and requested to:

  1. Issue annually a proclamation calling on the citizens of the State of Oklahoma to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities; and
  2. Urge all state agencies, interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff each December 7 in honor of the individuals who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor and in honor of those who died or were injured in World War II.

[Note: Editorially renumbered as § 90.10 of Title 25 of the Oklahoma Statutes to avoid duplication in numbering and to provide consistency in numbering.]

Passed the House of Representatives the 26th day of February, 1996.
Passed the Senate the 2nd day of April, 1996.
Approved April 8, 1996.
