The city is Brazil´s third largest. The state is the second largest GDP producer. While
there are many social problems, this city of almost three million is the best place to live in all of Latin and South America! (Rand-Mcnally, 1994) The city was planned by its forefathers to accomodate up to 100,000 inhabitants. Many of the folks who cannot afford the glitzier "centro", have been pushed up into the mountains overlooking the city and into the poorer outer suburbs in classic third world style. There are plenty diversions including
some of the best food and drink in South America. Many beautiful, lush, and tropical parks offer families much needed breathing room and exercise. Lake Pampulha and Praça da Liberdade are popular tourist destinations.
