This is Dona Maria Bárbara de Lima, 81 years old. She is the rediscoverer and present owner/caretaker of the Chico Rei Gold Mine. The "mouth" of the gold mine is located on her property. It is surrounded by rich tropical ferns and banana trees. Above the entrance to the mine are the ruins of the slaves´ quarters and later, Chico Rei´s residence. The aperature is about four feet wide and five feet ten inches high. Moss grows thickly on the damp walls for about eight feet into the interior. The mine is illuminated where the sun stops shining.
