TELL IT TO THE GAZETTE

...

Everyone draws the line against `choice'

In the July 25 Gazette Telegraph, Sandy K. Smith wrote that the real issue about abortion is a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body ("It's not about abortion, but the value of women"). I'd like the opportunity to refute that claim.

Everyone draws the line against choice somewhere. Although we see some crossover, we certainly don't see multitudes of pro-choice people joining the national group C.O.Y.O.T.E. (pro-prostitution activists) in the streets, even though the essence of the argument is the same -- choice. The choice to abort a pregnancy or the choice to earn money from sexual favors: In both cases, it's their body, isn't it?

From the viewpoint of a pro-life citizen, though, the right to choose an abortion is giving a woman the right to choose to murder another human being. The term "pro-life" is chosen over "anti-abortion" for the simple fact that we believe we are fighting to protect human lives. If abortion didn't result in the loss of life of one of the participants, then I can see no reason why being anti-abortion would carry any more credibility than being "anti-tummy-tuck."

The pro-choice movement is in a constant state of denial that the issue is about life and death at all. Smith's letter was a blatant expression of that denial. Given that the alternative is to be "pro-death," they make it an issue of personal freedom. Don't talk about the value of life.

The abortion debate is not about a woman's right to choose; it's about the value of human life.
