[NI0263] "Sarah went to her mother's house in Bristol on 31 December 1798 in the hope that the change of air would do Berkeley some good. 'Poor Nanny' was by now so ill with consumption she had to be sent home, but no one had yet made any connection between her illness and Berkeley's. In Bristol Sarah had the company and support of her family - both Mary Lovell and Eliza were living with their mother and they took turns to sit up with her during the night as Berkeley's fever and breathing difficulties increased...Berkeley died on 10 February 1799. Sarah was shattered, After his death she stayed with Southey and Edith at their house in Westbury, the breach with Coleridge forgotten in mutual grief. Southey organized the funeral and burial. Sarah seems to have undergone a breakdown, her hair fading and falling out, so that she was forced to cut it all off and wear a wig. It never recovered its former growth and was a source of mortification to her for the rest of her life." source: A Passionate Sisterhood, Kathleen Jones, p. 78, Constable-London 1997
