"The Parish Register records the death of Revd John Coleridge: 'died suddenly Saturday morning 3 Clock 6th De.' ('De.' for the tenth month; MNH 10, 12; PR ii. 1056b; HBK 11-12; V 21; Weissman and Holmes somewhat mistake the exact dates. CL i. 355).
Throughout his life, STC - and even Wordsworth - 'kept' on 4 October the anniversary of these events in a way that those who suffer severe trauma often do (HBK 12, 71, 173, 183). The date and events associated with it haunted STC's life and influenced Wordsworth's as well. STC chose 4 October because he believed it was not only the date his father returned home and died (see CL i. 355-6), but also the date, two years earlier in 1779, of his terrible quarrel with Frank..."
