Commemorative Information
Cemetery: MOASCAR WAR CEMETERY, Egypt
Grave Reference/
Panel Number: 1. E. 15.
Location: Moascar War Cemetery is situated just off the main Ismailia-Cairo road, 10 kilometres by road from Ismailia. The cemetery is contained within an army camp, 3 kilometres along Treaty Road.
Historical Information: Moascar was the name given to the former British camp near the town of Ismailia, and the nearby cemetery was named after the camp. It is a desert cemetery started by the military authorities, and was used for the war casualties, mainly from the Canal Zone. After the war, graves were moved in from Kantara West New War Cemetery, Ras Gharib Coptic Cemetery, Qina Military Cemetery, Safaga European Cemetery and Safaga Military Cemetery where permanent maintenance was not possible. There are almost 500 war casualties commemorated in this cemetery. In addition there are a large number of non-war graves, in the ground immediately behind the war graves, from the period between the end of the war and the evacuation of the British forces from Egypt.
