The Author of Pooh

Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956), professional English writer .
Wife- Dorothy.
Son- Christopher Robin Milne.
They lived on Mallord Street in Chelsea, and at Cotchford Farm, near Hartfield.
Milne wrote twelve books of essays for such periodicals as Vanity Fair,The Daliy News, The Outlook, The Sunday Express, The Sphere, and Punch,
He also wrote 20 plays, 5 novels and autobiographical material.
Only the novel Mr. Pim Passes By and the play Toad of Toad Hall (a dramatization of Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows ) received much acclaim, and this was nothing compared to the love for the Christopher Robin Books.

His wife Dorothy (Daphne) is often considered to be the one who originally provided personalities for many of the characters, while playing with Christopher and his toys.
Daphne submitted A.A. Milne's first (published) Christopher Robin work, the poem "Vespers," to a magazine for publication without A.A.'s knowledge.

The Illustrator

Ernest Shepard (1879-1976)
Ernest decided as a child to become an artist and his father encouraged this by enrolling him into a special art school and then in 1897 Ernest became one of the youngest students to be accepted into the Royal Academy School where he would earn two scholorships.

While attending the Academy, Shepard met Florence Chaplin. They married in 1904 and had two children Graham born in 1907, and Mary, born in 1909. One of Graham's toys, a teddy bear named Growler, became the model for the bear we all love in the Christoher Robin books.

He was a solider during WW I and by the end had been promoted to Acting Major. Florence died in 1927, and Shepard remained unmarried until 1943, when he married Norah Carroll.

When A. A. Milne was looking for someone to illustrate some children's verse he would be putting in Punch, Shepard was recomended. Milne was a bit reluctant to use Shepard but in the end Milne was persuaded to let Shepard illustrate the poems that would eventually be included in When We Were Very Young.

When Milne was planning out Winnie-the-Pooh, he insisted that Shepard illustrate the book.

Shepard also illustrationed many other books, including Richard Jefferie's Bevis, and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, Shepard made the first illustraions Grahame was happy with for his book.

Later on Shepard would provid the color plates for the Christopher Robin books, and in 1965 he would write his own book Ben and Brock and Betsy and Joe in 1966 . Although, these books did not recive acclaim or even much popularity Shepard enjoyed writing them.

Tigger's Song
From Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too
Written by: Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman
Performed by: Paul Winchell "Tigger"

The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is Tiggers are wonderful things
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of springs
They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, FUN!
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is I'm the only one

The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is Tiggers are wonderful chaps
They're loaded with vim and with vigor
They love to leap in your laps
They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, FUN!
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is I'm the only one.

Tiggers are wonderful fellahs.
Tiggers are awfully sweet.
Everyone elses is jealous,
And thats why I repeat...

The wonderful thing about Tiggers
Are Tiggers are wonderful things
Their tops are made out of rubber
Their bottoms are made out of springs
They're bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy
Fun, fun, fun, fun, FUN!
But the most wonderful thing about Tiggers
Is I'm the only one.
