Nabla Environmental Research is a consulting company focusing on statistics and mathematical analysis, and all that such work entails:
- simulation and optimization modelling
- data modelling and database design
- algorithm development
- computer programming
The principal researcher and consultant is Robert Menes. The application of numerical methods spans numerous domains as is reflected in the experience of the principal and the company. The specific areas of expertise are listed below with in-depth descriptions.
- Social Statistics and Program Design
- Numerical Analysis for Physical Science
- Business Statistics and Business Planning
- Policy Modelling
- Environmental Systems Analysis
The company has delved into a number of areas which represent a departure from traditional information management or policy development. Instead, we have chosen to combine the two - and add a third component: numerical analysis. The result is policy, managed as information and developed through mathematical models.
The Information Manager Software Concept
Nabla has developed a number of computer programs for Windows which implement the basic concept of managing textual information through databases, rather than in word processor files, or spreadsheets. While this is hardly a radical idea, it has not been used for standard management information which has been managed in documents. This rebels against the concept of the document as the fundamental information object. For the management information necessary for business organizations, the document is not the key information object. The content usually supercedes format. And, where there is even the smallest hint of structure, the information should be managed within a database management system.
The following "managers" have been created:
Business Plan Manager | Structured but extensive business plans, incluing goals, objectives, programs, human resources, and information management plans |
Committee Manager | The essential data for managing any committee: Terms of Reference, Membership, Agenda, and Minutes |
Policy Database Manager | Policy data, in the form of "briefing notes" managed as structured data |
Resume Manager | Basic structures for resumes |
Metadata Manager | Metadata required for the management of data warehouse servers |
Bulletin Board Manager | Bulletin Board management via the Web |
Each of the "managers" utilize the same paradigm: a simple but flexible structure for the data is implemented in a relational database. Most of the data entities are unstructured binary or text objects. The programs implement a simple front-end and report generation facility. The report generation focused on HTML production. Thus, it is assumed that document dissemination will largely be through the Internet. Finally, the metadata and bulletin board managers also incorporate FTP transfer and site-scanning.
