[Note 2: I collected these comments from a variety of people. I personally
have no knowledge of many of these places and take no responsibility if you
buy a book you don't enjoy. :-) Phone numbers and precise addresses can be
gotten by calling directory assistance for the appropriate city. Call ahead
for precise hours, as even when I list them they are subject to change.]

just one with a southern exposure. [06/03]

	http://www.vintagestock.com). I haven't seen this one, but I
did visit the one in Joplin MO, and it was pretty good. (See
na-cent.htm#joplin.) One of several branches of this
store; others are in Overland Park, KS; Joplin, MO (The Book
Barn); Kansas City, MO; Springfield, MO (Caveman); and

============================================================================
------------------------------

Dallas/Ft. Worth TX:

Aldredge (on Maple Ave just north of the Crescent). Tends somewhat toward
the pricier wares of an "antiquarian" book dealer, but *also* has a
good selection of not-as-expensive used books.
Barnes & Noble (Preston and Beltline). Another B&N superstore. Newest of
the three superstores (the others are Bookstop and Borders).
"Raised my purist hackles by shelving in one section authors like
Danielle Steele with authors like Anais Nin." Other people have
said, however, that they would never buy a book in a store that had
separate sections for "fiction" and "literature"; go figure.
Big D Books (1516 Centerville Rd). "*Classic* used book store. It looks
like a condemned building, and the inside is a maze of shelves.
Almost no space to walk between the shelves. There are a lot of
books, especially SF, and the owner is very knowledgeable! This is
my idea of the *best used bookstore* in Dallas." "I couldn't
disagree more with the previous assessment. It's not much bigger
than a 7-11, the owner is a surly jerk and the book selection isn't
	very good."
The Book Shoppe (1822 W Berry, Fort Worth, 817-926-8208,
	http://www.thebookshoppe.com). Used books since 1987.
Primarily a paperback used book store with a stock of
	approximately 100,000 books. [08/04]
Bookstop (5400 E Mockingbird E of Central; 820 Preston at Forest;
        Plano Parkway & Central, Plano; I-35E at 3040 in a strip mall area;
others). 20% off for members, and the stores are large. The have
5+ stores in Dallas (and suburbs) and are expanding. Not quite as
good a selection as Taylor's, and the clerks range from good to
(usually) illiterate. They have a habit of removing books from the
shelves if they don't sell, so if you see it, it's risky to wait.
Mediocre compated to the other superstores in Dallas. Still, there
are lots of books, and the price is good.
Borders Books (Preston and Royal Lane, also Preston Rd N of Plano
Parkway in Plano). Very good, fairly eclectic selection,
attached CD store, and espresso bar. It has (some) chairs to
browse in and better staff than the Bookstops. Store in Plano
seems to have slightly less stock than the other.
Constellation. New Age books, and courses.
Forbidden Books (near Fair Park (State Fair) west of downtown). "A variety
of books and tapes that fit the store's title. "
Half-Price Books (main store: 5915 E Northwest Hwy at Shadybrook). The
biggest chain of used and discounted books in Texas. "I find their
selection of fiction sadly lacking (especially SF). For SF go to
Big D Books!" But another person says, "My favorite bookstore. I
love surprises and you never know what amazing things might turn up
here." Someone else describes it as "mined out." (I suspect it
may be all these things, though perhaps not simultaneously.)
Half-Price Books (the "Plano" on the west side of US 75, just north of the
Campbell exit). Along with the main store, generally has the best
selection of technical books. This store just expanded, and is
neater and better organized than it used to be.
The History Merchant (in the Uptown area). "Like Aldredge, a somewhat
upscale store (used verging on rare, priced accordingly). Located
in the only timber-framed structure I've ever seen in Dallas."
One of the premier delaers of Winston Churchill books in the US.
Also has some fine firsts other than history. Pricey, but
	attractive.
Lone Star Comics Books and Games (11661 Preston; 1900 Preston Rd at Park,
Plano; others). "This is, sadly, the best SF store in the area.
The owner has a tendency towards (1) censorship, (2) firing
managers once they are have built up clients and experience (and
hence are paid more), and changing the stock towards toys,
children's playthings, and bubble-gum cards, and (3) returning
books as soon as they fail to sell. There is much less space for
SF books, and only GP-rated mainstream comics now. Still, where
else can you go?" "There's a lot of new science fiction at the
Preston location (at the intersection of Preston and Forest), and
the latest issues of Locus and other trade magazines as well.
Good selection of comics, games and related material."
Majors Scientific (on Butler Street just off Harry Hines). The best source
in Dallas for technical books in biological and medical sciences.
Mary Anne's Books (2918F Jupiter inside a flea market). In a flea market
and only open Thursday-Sunday. *Good* selection of books in all
categories, including collector's items and first editions. Old
magazines and comics in the back. May be closed.
Paperbacks Plus (Gaston near Abrams in the Lakewood area). This is a fine
friendly bookstore which seems to be coming back to life. They also
still have their old store in Mesquite, where the stock moves slowly
but the prices are low. "Best independent bookstore in Dallas. Huge
selection, lots of reading chairs, low prices, trade-in or credit
policy, knowledgable owners, 20 years in business.... The Mesquite
store is very well stocked and prices in both stores are very
	reasonable."
Recycled Books (Denton). "Despite being a 45-minute drive away, this is
still the best bookstore in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area by a long
shot. If you can only visit one bookstore in the area, this is it.
The only downside is that they do know what they have, so it's hard
to find really good stuff cheap."
Rootabega Books (Snider Plaza, about 2 blocks south of Lovers and west of
Hillcrest). A truly fine childrens' bookstore, run by enthusiasts,
	with a very large stock.
University of Dallas Bookstore. "Has lots of University press books
(intellectual history, etc.) which you won't find anywhere else in
the area. This is not large enough to be worth going to for any one
specific title, but worth browsing. The prices on their overflow
table are typically dirt cheap ($1 a book or so), and I've found
	some amazing bargains there."

Denton:

Recycled Books (on the town square). A huge used bookstore with
well-managed stock *and* generally very reasonable prices.
They also have an active used-CD section, and a strong
specialty section in collectible SF. "Terrific store with
a good science fiction stock and great employees. Worth s
	seeking out."

------------------------------

Houston TX:

Barnes & Noble (at least nine locations).
Becker's Books (7405 Westview, 77055, 713-957-8088, http://www.houstonbooks.com,
Used books. 3500 square feet. Open 11AM-6PM or by appointment.
Book Collector (2347 University Blvd at Morningside, 713-661-2665). Not
checked out yet, but from the outside it appears to be in the nature
of Detering or Brazos, with a Brit-lit orientation. Reported to be
higher priced and not as friendly as other stores.
Booked Up (711 Studewood at E 7th, 713-868-3910). Used bookstore with good
liberal arts selection, Texana & Americana, art & architecture.
Books International (2015-F W Gray at Shepherd, 713-523-5330). French,
	Spanish, German books.
Bookstop Alabama Theatre (2922 S Shepherd at Alabama, 713-529-2345). "The
most charming of the four Houston-area locations of this chain, now
owned by Barnes & Noble but still operated under the Bookstop brand."
Located in what used to be an old movie palace, it's a fairly good
general bookstore, particularly popular non-fiction. Fiction genres
(especially SF and mystery) can be mediocre. One reader says,
"Elegant high-inventory store-- well-organized and split into many
categories, big science and computer section, broad selection of
periodicals, excellent section on lesbian/gay/bisexual culture,
good in religion/mythology/history/ sociology, good all round.
Especially handy for picking up guide books for Houston and for
traveling in Texas. I was a fan of the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'
at the Alabama Theatre, and went to all the anniversiary parties of
the midnight showings, not to mention seeing such classics as ALIEN
there on first release, so I was crushed when I heard they were
converting it into a bookstore. But ... they did a super job. All
they took out was the seats; they kept the entire architecture of
the theatre intact, and in fact, have maintained it much better than
the theatre owners did. Lovely carpeting, murals, high ceiling (of
course!), stairways, etc. You purchase your books at what used to
be the concession stand. It works. If Brazos Books is the classy
literati version of Houston book culture, the Bookstop in the
Alabama Theatre is pure Texan bravado: bigger than life, better than
it needs to be, and hugely satisfying." However, the SF collection
still lacks. Has an espresso bar in the balcony. Open til midnight.
Book-tronics (5370 Westheimer, between Sage and Chimney Rock, 713-626-4000).
"They advertise themselves as 'the bookstore of the future.' They
have virtually no books on paper; what they have (and they have a
lot of) are two floors of books on tape and a floor of CD-Roms.
Most of their titles, both the books on tape and the CD-Roms, are
available to either buy, or rent for a fee a little higher than
the average movie rental. Their selection of CD-Roms matches or
beats most computer stores, and they have the most books on tape
that I've ever seen in one place. It's new. I don't remember the
	hours."
Borders (at least three locations).
Brazos Bookstore (2421 Bissonnet at Morningside, 713-523-0701). Eclectic,
but known as a literary place, with readings. "The Brazos Bookstore
is *the* bookstore in Houston for the hip crowd, the literati, the
artsy people from Montrose, etc. Philip Lopate used to hang out
there, and I think he even mentions the place in one of his essays.
It's small, attractive, unassuming, and quietly excellent.
Especially in the areas of new and avant-garde fiction and
non-fiction, lit crit, poetry, and art. I bought a Man Ray T-shirt
there once: the famous photo with dewdrops on eyelashes. It's the
only T-shirt I ever saw them sell. A class act, all 'round. This
store is very much a *Houston* store. It epitomizes the
cosmopolitan, New-York-without-the-hassles feeling of the city."
Brown Book Shop (1517 San Jacinto at Bell, 713-652-3937). Good for science
and technical stuff. Celebrating its 50th year of business in 1996.
One reader writes, "When I was a boy, this was the premier Houston
general book store--back when Ted Brown was around. Larry McMurtry
speaks of Ted Brown & his store in his new book WALTER BENJAMIN AT
THE DAIRY QUEEN. Brown Book Shop has been under the ownership of
Mr. Pat Ginther for quite a while now. They are a big 'business
and technical' bookstore, with an online service for customers who
can't come in to downtown Houston."
Bumblebee Books and Toys (567 W Bay Area Blvd, Webster, 77598). Children's
	books.
Half-Price Books (University at Kirby). A large branch of the used
bookstore chain. Pretty good Texana section.
Half-Price Books (Westover at Montrose, and four other locations). A
	moderate-sized store.
Lucia's Garden (2942 Virginia, 713-523-6494). Specializes in mythology,
psychology, gender studies, herb lore and gardening.
Major's Scientific Books (7205 Fannin, 713-799-9922 or 800-221-9697). Good
for computer books and science texts, *especially* medical tomes.
Menil Collection Bookstore (1520 Sul Ross, 713-521-9148). Art books. Park
in the big parking lot on the 1500 block of West Alabama and there
is a walkway to the museum that takes you directly to the bookstore.
Munchkin's Mablies (2530 Times at Kirby, 713-522-3911). Children's books
	only.
Murder By the Book (2342 Bissonnet at Morningside, 713-524-8597). The
Houston source for mysteries, especially new stuff. Author signings
	almost every week.
Museum of Fine Arts (1001 Bissonnet at S Main, 713-639-7365). Lots and lots
	of art-related books.
Midnight Comics & Games (2505 S Highway 6, 77082,
	281-293-0226, http://www.midnightcomics.com). "Specialty
comic and gaming store that carries comics, games, trade
paperbacks, graphic novels, and new and used science fiction
and fantasy books and memorabilia." Open Mon-Fri 12N-12M,
	Sat 11AM-12M, Sun 12N-8PM. [02/04]
Nan's Games (2011 SW Fwy at S Shepherd, 713-520-8700). A game and comic
shop, but it has a rack of new SF, though heavily infested with
	official D&D pablum.
Out-of-Print Book Shop (2450 Times Blvd, 713-526-8616). "Self-explanatory."
Rice Campus Store (Rice Campus, S Main at Sunset, 713-527-4052). Avoid
unless looking for something written by a Rice faculty member.
Textbooks are expensive and there's not much else.
River Oaks Bookstore (3270 Westheimer at River Oaks Blvd, 713-520-0061).
New books in front, used in back. "Warm, good people."
Stop Look & Learn (2415 Robin Hood at Morningside, 713-528-6508).
	Children's books.
Texas Art Supply (2001 Montrose at Welch, 713-526-5221). Art-related books.
Third Planet (2718 SW Freeway near Kirby, the ugly blue building next to the
Holiday Inn, 713-528-1067). A comic and game shop, but they do
maintain a very large rack of new and old SF books. The new
location on the freeway makes them more accessible to those
traveling from elsewhere in Houston, but has displaced them from the
Bissonnet-Rice Village bookstore circuit. Discounts available only
	to comic subscribers.
University of Houston Cougar Bookstore (UH campus). A large campus
bookstore, usually cheaper than the Rice store.
Univeristy of St. Thomas Bookstore (UST campus). Reputedly good for
	literature.
University of Texas Health Science Center Books (6431 Fannin at University,
	713-794-1207). Medical and health books.

There are also lots of African-American, Spanish-language, Vietnamese,
Korean, and religious bookstores, for which I have no listsings (yet).

Robert B. Schmunk said in 1993:

For libro-philiacs with an afternoon to spare in Houston, your best bet is
to head for the corner of Bissonnet and Morningside and park your car.
Within a block or so you can find the Brazos Book Store, the Detering Book
Gallery, and Murder By the Book. Should you feel that you've
exhausted the possibilities in this area, a quick jaunt about six blocks
south to the Rice Village will take you to the Book Collector and a large
Half-Price Books. (Those of you with kids may want to look into Stop Look
& Learn or Munchkin's Mablies along the way.) If there's any time still
left in the day, you can then consider heading north up So. Shepherd to hit
the Bookstop Alabama Theatre. Turn west on Westheimer to the River Oaks
Bookstore or turn east on Westheimer & north on Waugh to Half-Price Books.
Go north to W. Gray and turn west, to catch a movie at the Cineplex River
Oaks Plaza or the River Oaks Theatre. On the way pass by or stop at an
amazing array of fine coffee shops." Now that's a great trip!

------------------------------

Austin TX:

Adventures in Crime and Space (607 W Sixth, across from Katz's Deli,
	512-4SF-BOOK, http://www.crimeandspace.com).
"Your best source for UK first editions in Texas. One of the top 5
specialty SF bookshopsin the country." Unfortunately, they have lost
their lease and are closing March 24, 2002.
Austin Books (51st and Lamar). Mostly games and comics, but still with
a considerable, albeit cramped, SF section.
B. Dalton's (Barton Creek Mall, 512-327-2960; Highland Mall, 512-452-5739;
and Northcross Mall, 512-454-5125). Your standard "chain" book
store that keeps a generic cross-section of books for most tastes.
Barnes & Noble (Arboretum Shopping Center, Great Hills at 183, Loop 360;
also Bee Caves Rd). "First incursion of the superstores into the
Austin area. Books, CDs, software, cafe. Books have a slightly
wider range than Bookstop. Lots of bargain books of the usual sort.
Cafe includes tall stools to sit on that look remarkably
	uncomfortable. Counter staff quite friendly."
The Book Cellar (3 W Central, Temple TX [north of Austin], 254-773-7545).
Called The Cellar because it's in one, this store has 3000 sq ft of
used paperback and hardback books. Some collectibles (mostly Texana)
are not out for display, ask the manager/owner. They don't trade
books but will pay cash for books they can use (generally 15-20% on
paperbacks). Paperbacks are all half the original cover price.
Book Exchange (7411 Burnet Rd, 512-454-6139). "Used paperbacks. Buy or
trade. Several rooms of mostly genre fiction. Categories include
general fiction, mysteries, SF, romance, historical romance, Regency
romance, Western romance, Westerns, spy, thrillers, and
	action/war novels."
Book People (603 N Lamar, 512-472-5050, http://www.bookpeople.com).
A large book store. Used to specialize in New Age (holistic
health, "metaphysics," philosophy, psychology, and related
areas), though it has reportedly recently announced a more
mainstream policy. Has a large gay/lesbian/bisexual section.
"I frequently find things here that I can't find at the other
big stores, because of their policy of hanging on to backlist
for long periods of time. I'm constantly discovering writers,
wanting to get what they wrote a few years back, and not
finding any because no one will keep backlist around.
BookPeople solves that problem for me. It has a good fiction
section, an interesting set of shelves featuring historical
novels, and history I've not seen elsewhere. Great kids'
	section."
Book Woman (918 W 12th, 78731, 512-472-2785). Specializes in women's issues
and feminist writings. "Women-owned and operated."
Bookstop (Central Market at 38th and N Lamar). A well-stocked general
bookstore, now part of the Barnes & Noble chain. The intelligence
and usefulness of the staff varies widely; some employees know next
to nothing. "In my experience, special orders come very quickly
	(one week)."
Borders Books and Music (10225 Research, 78759, 512-795-9553; 447 S Lamar,
Westgate Marketplace, 512-891-8974). Of the three superstores in
Austin, Border's has the most thoughtful selection of backlist
titles. Both Bookpeople and B&N often look as if the selection was
bought by the publisher's sales reps--stacks of the newest promotion
while forsaking the steady sellers from the past. The store is very
understated. The history selection is the largest in town.
Half Price Books (5555 N Lamar at Koenig, 512-451-4463; 2929 S Lamar, 512-443-3138;
	8868 Research, 512-454-3664; 13492 Research, 512-335-5759). The best
used book store in town, but only by default. This flagship Austin
store is now in a converted supermarket, with 80,000 square feet, a
rare book alcove of a couple thousand feet or more (containing some of
the old Detering stock from Houston). Loads of parking. The staff
will not search for titles, so if you're looking for something, you
must stop in and hope to find it.
Jung Society Bookstore (5555 N Lamar, Suite H-106, 512-458-1108).
Southpoint Books (Historic Square, Georgetown,
	http://www.southpointbooks.com). Used and out-of-print, Texas
history, WWII, cookbooks, fiction, childrens, ephemera.
	[01/04]
University Co-op (2246 Guadalupe, 512-476-7211). They sell only textbooks.
Walden Books (Barton Creek Mall, 512-327-1668). Another standard "chain"
	book store.
Whole Earth Provision Co. (2410 San Antonio, 512-478-1577; 1014 N Lamar
Blvd, 512-444-9974). Primarily an outdoor sporting goods store, but
has the best selection of books on outdoor sports and environmental
issues. Look here for trail guides, field guides, books on the
environment and natural history, and topographical maps.

San Antonio TX:

Antiquarian Book Mart (3217 Broadway, 210-828-4885). "This store is
immediately adjacent to Half Price Books. They have a mix of paper
and hardbacks. They also have an 'annex' behind the main store,
which has more restricted hours than the main store and I think
sells more rare books." Reportedly badly organized and not very
	high quality.
Bibliopola (4223 McCullough, 210-930-2665). A small, upscale used hardcover
	shop. Open Mon 11AM-3PM, Tue-Sat 10AM-6PM.
Blanco Books (14377 Blanco, just south of Cadillac). A medium-sized
	used-paperback store.
Book Den (449 McCarty, just west of San Pedro). A good used paperback
store. Also a few hardcovers. They have a good SF section.
There's a good Thai restaurant next door.
Cheever Books (3613 Broadway, 210-824-2665). A fairly large store. Mostly
hardcovers. "More 'rare' than 'used,' at least compared to other
places I've been in San Antonio." New location. Open Mon-Sat 10AM-8PM, Sun
	12N-8PM. [04/04]

paperbacks, mostly romance, mystery and SF. Open Mon-Sat 12N-6PM.
Half Price Books (3207 Broadway, 210-822-4597; 7959 Fredricksburg). This
store is immediately adjacent to Antiquarian Book Mart. They sell
new and used books, also records, magazines, etc. It feels more
like a new bookstore--large and well-lit. "One of the better
remainder houses I've run across with an excellent SF section.
Well organized, clean, and better-than-average stock." Open
	Mon-Sat 9:30AM-9PM, Sun 12N-8PM.

Phoenix AZ (and surrounding):

Phoenix:

Barnes & Noble (10235 N Metro Parkway East, 602-678-0088). Just
outside	north of the Metrocenter mall just off Peoria. Giant
bookstore with the ubiquitous espresso bar. No discounts like
	Bookstar.
The Bent Cover Bookstore (12428 N 28th Dr, north of Cactus 85029,
	602-942-3778, FAX 602-942-3095, http://www.bentcover.com).
New and mostly used books arranged in order. Very large SF,
mystery, and western sections. "They do have a very large and
interesting selection, and I was particularly impressed with
the SF paperbacks. [One caveat is that] it looked like they
had been stacking new acquisitions instead of shelving them
for months because it was IM-POSSIBLE to get around the front
of the store without stumbling over waist-high piles of books
everywhere." Their prices seem high on many ordinary items, but
when we were there the pricing was *half* the marked price
(except for SF and asterisked books), and this seemed a
permanent situation rather than a one-time sale. Open Mon-Fri
	10AM-5PM, Sat 10AM-6PM, Sun 12N-6PM. [03/04]
Bookstar (E Camelback at 22nd; 1457 W Southern, Mesa, 602-649-1699). Lots
of titles. Barnes & Noble superstore.
Borders Books & Music (Biltmore Fashion Park, 2402 E Camelback Rd,
602-957-6660; 1361 S Alma School Rd (east of Fiesta Mall),

Glendale, 623-487-9110; Village Square, 4555 E Cactus Rd (west
of Tatum), 602-953-9699) The Biltmore Fashion Park store
is a two-story bookstore with plenty of titles. Fast-food-
restaurant-sized espresso bar upstairs with plenty of chairs
and tables. Also a large section of CD's and tapes with
	listening couches. [12/03]
Heard Museum - Museum Shop and Bookstore (2301 N Central Ave, 602-252-8344,

	http://www.maps4u.com). Maps, travel, and outdoor
	recreation.  Phoenix store open Mon-Fri 8AM-6PM, Sat 9AM-5PM;
	Mesa store open Mon-Fri 9AM-7PM, Sat 11AM-5PM. [12/03]

Mesa:

Acceptance Books (2602 W Baseline #2, 480-820-8381, 888-548-8770,

	inspirational. Open Mon-Thu 10AM-6PM, Fri 10AM-5PM,

Book Gallery / Mesa Bookshop (50 W Main, 85201, 480-835-0757,
bookgallery@qwest.net). Used and rare. Big selection of
children's literature. In 12/03, they were merging the
contents of their Third and Camelback store in, so it was a
bit disorganized, but evidence indicates that when they're
finished everything will be correctly labeled. Open Mon-Fri
	9AM-6PM, Sat 10AM-6PM. [12/03]
The Bookend (6024 E McKellips Rd, 480-396-3351). Open Mon-Fri
	8AM-5:30PM, Sat 9AM-3PM.
Bookman's (1056 S Country Club Dr at Southern, 85210, 602-835-0505,
	http://www.bookmans.com). Used books, CD's,
DVDs/tapes, and even software. Biggest used bookstore in
town: however, "There's not much depth to the selection
either, though what they have is well organized. It's a
well-lit, family-oriented joint. They sell used videogames,
records, and magazines in addition to the items already
appearing in their listing." Probably best described as a
similar book selection to a Barnes & Noble, but all used. No
antiquarian or even many older books. All kinds of fiction
and non-fiction, including Japanese manga. [12/03]
CA Storyteller (4323 E Broadway Rd, 480-218-2274). Open Mon, Sat

	10818 N Scottsdale Rd north of Shea, 85254, 480-998-0606,
http://www.bookmasteraz.com). Used books. The store at
10818 N Scottsdale Rd is quite large, but the one at 2949
N Scottsdale Rd is even larger. The main drawback to either
store is that fiction categories have hardcovers shelved
separately several aisles away (and the one at 2949 has the
hardbacks double-shelved. Has one of the best "books on
